Somebody pick up a couple of the Original/Floater in maybe that new Copper pattern that Rapala has out. Then, bring them to the LSCWA meeting next week and we can check them out. Might not be much more than finding a source for the fiber optic eyes and gluing them on.
The bleeding bait series treble hooks are junk (the red hooks) replace them before you loose too many fish!

I think that the "fiber optics" need a source of light so that they can glow. If that is the case then I have to wonder just how much they will glow at the bottom of the river, especially if the water is cloudy or deep so that there is a lot less light penetration. And, how much can they glow if being used at night at the bottom of a river??
Naturally, they will glow just perfect on the surface and during the day or if they are gathering light from a camera flash.
I think that the paint system as mentioned by Kevin is a better option. Still, it would be interesting to see what these lure eyes look like up close and in person.

Fiber optics, nice idea. Alex is right- where's the light source. Agree with Houghton laker though. Harry has a quality hand finish. Would like to see him get into spoons and body baits, but the jigs take up his time. Man's gotta have alot of patience to hand finsh each of those jigs. Only place I get my jigs now.

Fiber optics, nice idea. Alex is right- where's the light source.
Maybe Al-D or one of the others here will know, but, with fiber optics there has to be a light source and not necessarily a power source like a battery. Just a light source and it could be the sun or a flashlight or the strobe from a camera flash.
If that light source is no longer available then the eyes on these lures will no longer glow and they become just like any other Rapala, right??

I know Paul Driggers will tell you one thing....when heating up the ends of the fiber optic....be careful because those rapalas will melt!!:lol::lol:

I've installed a few fiber optic systems and, from my experience, everything you say is correct.
The lure would probably work good at dusk/dawn times, as they collect the light that is available, and in deeper waters on sunny days, but once it's dark or running too deep, I believe the qualities of the fiber optics will be diminished.

Starting to look like another lure that is designed to catch fishermen first and foremost and the fish themselves second.

keep in mind that a lot of times our lures run deep in the water where almost no light is, but the color scheme of the lures still make a difference, even though there is so little light, to human eyes we would never be able to see any individual colors.
i'm not saying this isn't a gimmick, but just because we can't see it, doesn't mean walleye can't.

The colors on the lures should still be visible to the fish. The real question is whether there would be enough light at those depths, especially if it is after sunset, for the fiber optics to pick up and glow?

The fibers I have will work when collecting any UV rays, I made sight pins for my bow and they are awesome. When you heat the end of the fiber with a lighter, the end will form a mushroom shape. I will bring a couple of pieces to the Wed. meeting. Al:chillin:

Were the lips modified too?
Idunno. I'm still pretty much a hook and buck shot guy. I like the idea of modifying though. I would like to know more about the paint. Also about modifying the lips of Raps with something other than a file.

I don't know if they would work but they sure have met the requirement that a good lure needs to catch fisherman and not necessarily fish.
