Here's my scenario. Please add your $.02.

I have a 1976 Chrysler tri hull fiberglass bass boat. 16'. It had, until last week, the original EAGLE 24volt bow mount trolling motor. The motor had been in bad shape for a long time, so I knew it was going to die. Here are my questions.

Does anyone have a clue how many thrust lbs that old motor might have had?

Do you think a 55lb 12 volt motor will work or should I stick with the 24 volt?

Do you have any recommendations on what new motor to purchase? What do you run?

This is an old boat, so I'm looking to keep my spending under $500.

Any input will be appreciated.

If your only going to pony-up $500 boneZ - your lookin' @ a 12V motor!
Then the batteries....wiring... DUCT tape.....LOL!!!

A 12V 55LB 'Kota will do you most of the time , but if you use it to troll a LOT ; THINK AGAIN.

I can almost see your boat as my neighbors at the lake had one many years ago. If I recall it rode high and dry but was a fairly heavy hull. For me going from a 24v back to a 12v. would be almost as bad as going from a 12v. ignition on your car back to the 6v. systems that we all had to deal with prior to the mid fifties. Adequate power is something I just "have to have" on anything I own. I don't think you'll be happy.

A 55 lb thrust is fine. I have used a 42lb thrust on a 17' aluminum hull, while jigging in the Detroit River. Fairly high current, and the wind can rise up now and again. Always had good boat control.

BUT how long will your battery last??
I have a 70LB with 2 DC24's & I can go all day in a good breeze and still have good reserve.

On a fresh charge, a new 12V battery will last for more than 4 hours of continuous jigging on the Det. River. After that I'm ready for lunch and a nap.

contact thedude on this site. He may still have a 67 lb 24volt motor for sale. He's asking $250, and this motor would work great for you.

You sCHm@rT @zz.....
I know you guys live in a "gimme" world , but it probably NEVER occurred to you guys some of us would rather C&R several 10-14LB fish in 6 or 8 hrs than just go out & whack 5 or 6 eaters in an hour....
:p
I'm sure they'll get bigger again over there soon though..............and , and , and ~
I ain't moving over there just for that!
BTW - I finally did get around to using those Matzuo spinnerbaits I got from Ken , and the ONLY complaint I have against 'em is:
The northerns eat the paint off them REALLY fast!

There were two issues on my boat with that motor... the mount is about 10" longer than my current one... which was going to intrude into my fishing space on the bow more than I wanted it to. Second, I would have had to cut the shaft shorter in order to get the head low enough so as not to be too high on the bow. Two things I just didn't want to deal with at this time.

It's a really nice motor, works great. Just not exactly what I was looking for.

It has some issues. The low speed on 12 and 24 don't work. The low speed on 12 was to low to used most of the time and if I need 24 the low speed on 24 was not enough so I didn't miss those 2 speeds anyways. I told a guy that I would sell it for $110 ($10 going to this site). If he don't come through do you want it. I got me a Minn Kota Terranova and don't need this motor laying around. There is also a crack on the top, I put some sealer on it so no water gets into the head, don't look good but it works.
