Hello all I was supposed to go sturgeon fishing but the weather did not look that good so I called my buddy and told him to forget it for tonight and we will do it another time.. Well the later the evening got the better the weather was looking so I said the heck with it and headed out to the river for some more wire pulling.. Well I started fishing at 9pm and got two right away then after that it took some time for me to get another and I was questioning myself if I was doing it right was I going to fast BLAH BLAH BLAH and so forth well I said I wasent going to hang out to 1am to get my 6 fish..

Well I finally they seem to turn on and got the other 4 in short order and a little change of locations and then had the boat on the trailer at midnight I thought yeah baby I am out of here:lol:.. Well the fish are on ice and I hit the shower because man was it humid out there :yikes:..

I have a question for you season wire pullers what do you do if you want to run down stream as your working a area but you know if you keep the same speed going down stream your going to be flying, do you slow the motor down or do you just let out more wire to compensate for the speed? I tell you what I am glad I am only useing a 15' and a 5' kicker because man would I have a mess in the boat with tangles if I dident..

The glove worked alright I found out tonight that I droped the wire a few times:yikes:and I had to hurry up and grab it:yikes:.. It was a awesome night and my confidence in my handling is rising all the time.. I tried to use just the bow mount alone for power tonight no dice but I will have to say using the kicker and the bow mount togeather is the ticket.. Here is a picture of the fine fish that bit my line tonight... Cya Slick

PS..Lures wre the same as last night

Ya, its hotter than 40 he11s out there tonight but you did pretty good. Forget about about the downsteam approach for now, master what is working, then go on to level 2. Considering the barometer and the weather, you did better than you most. In time, it will all work, but handlining is an art in itself. Keep up the good work, it will come...

Well you know my biggest concern was having the abilty to be able to catch walleye consitantlly doing the 4 basic methods to river fishing for walleye and to me that is Jigging, bottom bouncing, whipping and handlining, the first three I have no problem with I can catch limits pretty consitant.. But handlining I never gave a chance because I gave up on it way to soon many years ago.. I know I have just scratched the tip of the ice berg of handlining and all the advanced moves that you can do while handlining but I am looking forward to learning them over time and I am just glad I am catching fish doing it..

The handlining gurus get all the thanks for passing info along to me and others members and you know who you all are.. Thats why I enjoy taking other members out and show them what I am doing so they can catch more fish as well.. Passing the info is whats important and useing Gulp of course  always 4" turtle back pumkin seed color:lol: have faith you old real worm fisherman:lol: Cya Slick

First off Nice job on the fish Slick.....You had a nice warm night for being out there!! When I want to circle back to work a area over again...I just leqave my stuff down and keep the same speed to circle back......I can't tell you how many walleye I've caught flying along going down river to start over again!!! Well I'm off to try a little wire pulling and Jigging !!

I just leave the controls alone and go down stream working it. if you just leave it in the water the weight comes off the bottom and the fish take it sometimes that way. It does not take that long to go around in a circle to matter anyways . Just take a drink and relax for that min...

Good job Slick. It was dang hot outside last night. I was mowing my backyard and was thinking about hooking up the boat but then I thought about that 5:30 alarm and changed my mind.

When I used to pull wire a lot and wanted to back up we would just turn the boat more towards the shore. Going more accross the current will let you slip back downstream and you continue fishing the whole time.

My favorite is getting the call on the cell and then hooking a fish. :D I love telling whoever it is to hang on, set the phone down and then let them listen to the sounds of a walleye flopping on the deck. Life is good !!

for the tangles, if you go to longer leads use mason hard tight line, spools up real nice on the bottom of boat with hardly a chance to tangle, for the short runs with15 and 30's, some times i use that iron silk, my buddy uses mason hard tight no matter what. i also found that cheap eagle claw 20 or 30lb test is good also, only 2 buck for 100 yards so if you can not find masons eagle claw cheap stuff works good to stay tangle free.

as for thedown stream as long as your pulling the weight the lures will follow, hard to do with 2 people, but we did it by the sugar cube in PH and gps said 3mph and we hit a 4 pounder in 39fow couple weeks ago. i usually do not do it for long distances.

i may be out there tonight:)

Guess I'm the exception I will slow down when I head downstream. But I only do it if I'm going to move a good distance down river otherwise I just angle more towards shore.

Lip ripper what I have seen so far is it can range from say 1mph to 2.0mph it all depends on the current were your at at the time.. I mainly zigzag back and forth across the river from Canada to the US, I use to be so concered about the speed and I am comeing to find out not to worry so much like I did from the start.. I try and make very little progress up stream and were I do make progress is in the slower current area's.. This is just what I have observed so far and if I want to make more progress up stream I just speed up a tad..

What I have observed so far also is that I catch more fish up and down the breaks from shallower to deeper water,, this is my two cents so far but I still have a lot to learn.. I hope to make it out tonight if the winds would lay down a tad, I dont know if I am ready for a heavy wind situation just yet:lol:Cya Slick

Slick that is a great mess of fish, I hope they taste as good as they look. The only time I tried handlining is in the Trenton Channel last spring and it was 8 hours with a big old goose egg. Kind of put me off on the whole thing, no offense to you handliners out there. I am just trying to figure out a way now that when we put the boat in the water the fish will just swim up and let me scoop them up.:D

i do the zigazag thing also, going right up current just does not feel right and i have only really started doing this handlining stuff alot this year so i am still a newb at it also.

thanks tubejig for the pm.
tomorrow night looks worse for fishing and i hope it gets better after dark tonight. i hate the north wind when its 15 or more, just harder to stay in the same spot and the water gets dirtier.

Bassmad2 I use to feel the same way about it, but I did not like not knowing how to do a method of walleye fishing and I felt like I was hindered.. So this year I was determined to figure it out and only handlining three times this year and pull limits 2 out of the three times I feel like I am spoiled right off the bat:lol:.. Cya Slick

You can slow down some when pulling Rapalas...but speed up a little with spoons and spinners!! Some of those old timers pulling spoons just fly around searching for fish!!

I love fishing a bank like what you said slick....when coming off a shallow end dropping off....try to hold the wire in your hand instead of letting it follow the drop....a lot of times they'll slam that suspended bait!!;)
