Hey guys,

I've been saving my money to get a climber this year and I think I'll be going with a summit. Question is, should I go Viper or Razor? I like the idea of having the rifle bar on the Viper but I plan on using it mostly for bow season. Does that bar get in the way of standing up? I think that bar would make me feel more comfortable in the stand as well. Any comments appreciated!

I have the Viper and love it.. Its my first climber and I like having the bar. It does give me a better sense of security since Im not big on heights...

I have the Viper and I have never had a problem shooting my bow over the bar. My biggest regret about the Viper is the amount of time I sleep in it.....damn thing is too comfortable!!!!

Packerfan The bar is what I look for because I hate climbers and it makes me feel safer.I have an API with the bar in front. I had a 10 point come in at 15 yards and I stood up to shoot, the bottom cam hit to bar when I released the arrow. I didnt get the deer and the string and cable wraped up around my arm!!! I still wont use one without the bar its just too scary!!!

i have the viper and i too hit the rail on a straight down shot,i hit him just a little to far back and i was to new to do real good at tracking before the yotes tore him up:mad:since then i have raised my seat on the straps so that when i get up to shot now i am above the climer rail.you just have to be carefull when youre shooting thats all.oh yeah it is really easy to fall asleep in also!

I also have the Viper. It is my first climber and I love it, like the other guys said its very comfortable and with alittle pratice shooting from it pre-season you'll be very confident shooting from it. -Tom

I have a goliath, which is the same as the viper but has more room, i would pick the viper. they are extremely comfortable (i have been know to take a nap or two in mine :) ) the bar there doesn't interfere with bowhunting, it adds that extra sense of security, i am not a big fan of heights, but in my climber i and not scared to get up 16 to 20+ feet

I have the viper and love it. no problem with the bar. Like sork1 I get some of my best sleep 20 ft up a tree in my viper (which is probably why I dont kill as many deer as I would like) LOL

very comfortable indeed and fairly easy to pack in and out and easy/safe to climb.

Hope this helps,
J-

It will come down to personal preference. I personally only like the bar when climbing and tuck it away once I am up to hunting height for a open view. I had the razor and liked everthing except for carrying into nasty areas which are most I hunt, not to add more choices but if you like the bar also look at the bullet backpacker from summit or if you are like me and prefer a open look and are in decent shape check out the broadhead backpacker these 2 have all the great summit features but also pack flat.

Anyone have the Viper Classic? The steel one? It's way cheaper than the aluminim one but is the extra weight a PITA? My delemia is Viper aluminium, or the viper steel. The steel one is $100 cheaper!

Sounds like you have your mind made up on a Summit, but check out the Lone Wolf Sit & Climb if you will be doing any amount of bowhunting from your climber. The sit bar folds up under the seat when you aren't using it.

I would not trade my vipor for any stand unless it was the Summit 180 SS. With this climber you can sit with your back against the tree like normal or you can sit facing the tree in comfort. In certain situations using the tree as a shield can be a good thing. Either way Summit is a good choice. Best of luck........

Corona,

Not sure how much more the classic weights over the aluminum verison, but I would think that it could be pretty substantial. It would depend on how far u plan on carrying it in and out of the woods if the extra $ is worth it to you.

Last year I hunted mostly public land and with my viper (with pack straps), small pack and bow walking acouple of miles in and out was a PITA. Gotta imagine that with 5-10 pounds (just a guess) more on my back would have been even worse.

Hope this helps some,
J-

I have the Viper and think its too dang heavy,..... I have one of the i believe API climbers, its from a while back but if you think you are going to do a lot of walking go with something lighter...

The reason i got the viper is because someone stole my api, after using the viper for a year me and my buddy went and scouted out his property 1/4 mile from where my stand was stolen and wouldnt you know some jerk off stole it and was just leaving it at the bottom of the tree he was hunting from.... still had my name scratched in it and everything.... needless to say it came home with me and that was the best day scouting ever...

and that is when i relaized how much lighter it was than my viper.... so now i have to climbers... one is just lighter and A LOT MORE SUN FADED:(

I have both and hunt almost exclusively out of the Razor. The open front is really nice for bowhunting. Both are good stands, and don't kid yourself, you'll fall asleep just as much in either one! (Common sense point - wear a full-body harness the entire time you are off the ground with any stand)

Best Regards,
Byron :)

I was going to say the same. They cost a little more but are worth every penny. I got one 2 seasons ago and i'll never own anything but a lone wolf now. Easiest and most compact packing, lightest, quietest (climbing and packing) stands out there. And the sit and climb is very comfotable unlike what some say about the hand climber. I would at least check them out before purchasing anything else.

I have both the steel one and the alluminuim, the steel one sucks it will rust and is way to dang heavy the aluminuim is a day and night difference and it is even quiter going up the tree, trust me the extra weight doesnt seem to bad compared to the money you save, until you use it all season.also bass pro has put it on sale for the past three years know should be going up soon if it isnt all ready they are the cheapest i found.

I would start with the site sponsors first if there are any out that way.... If those dont pan out, I picked one up off of Ebay last Year (NIB) and shipped to my door for around $225 - $230...

I believe they usually are $240 - $260 in stores.. Plus tax...

Awesome stand. All Lone Wolf stands are nice.

If you are set on the Summit, go with the aluminum Viper. You'll be glad you did.

I have two the Python XLS which has a swing up gun rest or it can be used as a foot rest. I keep it down when bow hunting, It does get in my way when bow hunting.

Then I bought my daughter a Cobra XLS, little lighter and smaller for her to carry afield. No gun rest, great little stand.

You might want to check sites like craigslist for used summit stands, little cheaper!

I have have used anumber of other types by diffrent manufacturers, ask your huntin buddies to try theirs out.

I endorse Summit for all my climbing stands.
