Well went out with a buddy tonight handlining and we limited out in 4 1/2 hrs had to work for them but it was a blast my first limit handlining got to love it.. All I used for leaders was a 15' and a 5' kicker with snubber the lures we used were Rable rowsers and #7 rapala the colors seemed to change all night the Rapalas colors were brown trout, purple dessent and for the colors of the Rable rowsers fire tiger and another I dont know the name for blue and silver..
I see handlining being in my future for a long time to come, Houghton laker I do enjoy that Iron silk 20lb flow green for my leaders with 5' of mono very nice for the leaders easy to see at night, there is one thing I need to find some kind of glove of some sort because even that coated wire after awhile wears on your hand.. Man there was only a couple boats out there and it was as flat as it could get no more morning handling trips for me because now I will become a vampire:lol:.........
Well it looks like got handlining down but I will admit it was a perfect night for handlining no wind at all and Dave I had a blast untill next time.. Cya Slick
PS..No Gulp needed for this trip:lol: and no picture this time eighter but there will be soon enough because you can bet I will be back out there alot more before summer is over..

Great report Slick, congrats on the fish. It is a little easier fishing when you make the switch to the darkside, alot less traffic. LOL:evilsmile

Nice work. You can't beat a nice quiet night on the river... The limit makes it even better.

Give it a few times out and your hands will be fine, you'll hardly even notice the rough skin or cracks:p

Good going on the fish Slick!! I knew youd like it once you got going....those Rabel rousers are working great down here also!! I need to get a few more in different color selections!!
When I come up there to visit you I'll show you what I use...I trick one of the river rats showed me.....go to your local bike shop and ask for old tire tubes about the size of your fingers....cut them in about 4"pieces.....I wear one on my index finger.....and sometimes one a couple fingers down......another thing that works it cutting the tips off a good rubber glove....the thicker ones for staining or cleaning....then cut the finger off!

Before my fingers became one big callus, I used to use little "finger gloves". They sell them at lakeside. I used to get mad at them because they would fall off though. I like the idea of the tire tube, that looks like it would work great.

Hey Kev I was holding the wire in my hand like this and then close my hand with the thumb pressing down on the wire last night which seemed to work the best for me.. I would not mind having the whole inner tube covering all 4 fingers, unless you having some thing else in mind, I could see how the rubber in the inner tube would really help grip the wire..
I was useing a 1 3/4 pound sinker because of the wire being coated..Cya Slick

You fared much better than we did last night. We tried to find a bite near dusk and couldn't buy an eye. 2 hours and all we got was smallie

You may be handling the wire quite a bit different than I do because of the way you are fishing in your boat compare to mine! In mine I'm sitting at the back of it with my one arm hanging over the side!! so I am only using the one hand to bounce it along! Kind of like how Huntingmaniac is sitting here in his boat!

On mine I am siting on the gunnel with one arm over the side but I would really like to find some thing to cover all 4 fingers with I am sure I will find some thing.. I just wanted to show how the wire was laying in my right hand, it just seemed confortable that way.. Cya Slick

brown trout worked for my buddy last night also, for me it was an orange with yellow and black dots with a white belly night stalker. any thing else just caught rockies and smallies. were you by stag? seen 2 or 3 boats up above us that left about 1am.

Hey Slick,
I've only experemented a couple of times, But when I did I used a pair of neoprene gloves. Great grip without loss of feel. Again, I havent a lot of experience with this type of fishing, but the neoprene seemed to work well for handlining. I think my hand might get a little sweaty, but it sure eased the cable cutting in to my hands.Anybody else try this approach?

Great job Slick night time is the only way to go to get the water just to fisher men and women. Try to hold your hand backwards so that your pinkie finger is to the real and your index finger is to the lures, then all you will need is a finger guard in your index finger that you can get at lakeside or lots of other places. I use 60# none coated for several reasons but the biggest reason is that after a short time your coating will start to peel off and screw up your reel and cost you fishing time. You should also carry a repair kit on your boat for your hand lining time on the water, just some sleeves, cleaves, large lock over snaps for your sinker, shanks, finger tabs, and a spool of wire. I have these items in a small plastic box that I carry in my boat that I have carried for over the last 25 years and it has gotten me or my fishing buddies back fishing with minimum down time. A couple of my buddies that hold the wire in the same manner that you do use leather glove and they all seem to agree that the ones made from pig skin work the best so they can still fill the line. Stop over sometime and I'll show you my set-up if you would like. P.M. me sea-nile one

I use uncoated wire because you don't need as much line to get bottom. I use a leather trolling finger on the index finger. you can buy them at lake side, I buy mine from grangers. they are way cheaper but I buy them by the gross and share with a bunch of my trolling buddies.

Blown tire tube is free :D and they stay on your finger much better..for me at least!
I'm gonna have to try the tire tube myself. Tired of having the lakeside finger protectors falling off, or having the wire rub right threw the leather. Looks like you already have hand lining down Slick, good job!
I see a midnight trip to the SCR in my future!

I have been handlining for a few years now and have used several different types of gloves. I also prefer NON-coated wire. I have used heavy leather gloves, batting gloves, golfing gloves, etc. The best gloves that I have found are kevlar gloves. These gloves are lightweight and can be used several times before wearing through the index finger. Most automotive manufacturing plants stock these gloves. If you happen to know someone that works in manufacturing, they may be able to pick you up a pair.
Also, do you have pictures of the "Rable rowsers" you were using? I am not sure I have heard of that lure before.
