View Full Version : Grand Haven Pecking Away

I fished with a friend Sunday night and fishing was slow to start. Steve even mentioned that we might get skunked:yikes:, which me forced to change our entire program trying to get the skunk out. Then we pecked away steadily and quit as it was getting dark. Action started with a couple knock-offs, finally landed a chinook, then had a very brief hook-up on a dipsey so we were 1/4. We ended up 4/7, all chinooks. Never hooked a double and 6 out of seven bites were on the riggers. Plum crazy was 1/2 and yellowtail 2/2(I can't believe I didn't put down a yellowtail to start:lol:). Two other spoons on sliders went 1x each. Mostly in 130-150 FOW.

This morning(8/6) I met Malainse at the dock in the gloomy dark. We were set up about 6 am and had a steady procession of knockoffs and rips that didn't hook up until we were 1/6 with a released shaker our only fish brought to boat. Then we boxed a couple cohos, and steadily pecked away at some chinooks for a while until we were 6/11 by about 8. I think every short E-W pass through 115 FOW got us a fish during that time, but oddly, once again no doubles, even though a couple of our battles took quite a while. Especially long was Malainse's introduction to lead-core on a the 12-13ish chinook that was foul-hooked on the half-core:dizzy:. It was released to tire someone else out:lol:.

Fished without more action until about 10, and on our way back in just before we were planning to pick up up lines at 100 FOW we had another knockoff, then immediately caught another chinook. We turned out to land it, and decided we should finish 1 more pass out to 120 and back, but no more bites. Ended up 7/13; 2/3 on a flounder pounder at 55, 2/4 on a big green/glow spinnie & tree frog squid back 100 on a dipsey, 2/2 on a glow green ladderback J on the half-core, 1/2 on a Nitro twister on a 7-color, and a couple other bites on spoons.

Thanks for the good company, Steve and Mitch.

Thanks for the report. I will be in Grand Haven on August 11-18 for vacation and bringing the boat. Anyone else going to be there?

Planning on heading out of GH Monday the 13th after work.

Sounds like 100-120 fow is the place to be.....

Is ti better put out at North Shore as oppose to the municipal launch?

North Shore Marina does not have a public launch ramp, but if you leave your boat there you will avoid a longggg no-wake zone.

A coworker and I hit Lake Michigan about 5pm Monday afternoon.

We did put in at the Municiple launch behind the power plant. The forecast was for 1-2 foot waves. We were in 4-6 foot rollers. Every now and then, a good one would break over the bow of his 17 foot boat. I seem to have lost my "sea legs". I used to ride the waves all day, no problem. These waves made me feel like ****. At about 6p, I looked over at Mike and said "You know Mike, I've been thinking about this for a while now. And I'm pretty sure I'm going to puke. Are you going to make fun of me for puking on you boat?" He assured me he wouldn't, so I took off my hat, put my sunglasses in my hat, and placed them on the floor. I then violently vomited over the gunnel.

We trolled for another two hours or so before our first real action. Then, just after dusk, the pole with the Moonglow Watermelon spoon released, and I shouted "FISH ON!" and grabbed the pole. Brought in a nice King Salmon. http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/531/medium/000_2090.jpg

While getting him out of the net, the pole with the Moon Glow J plug released, and Mike brought in another King. About 8#.

The boat next to us brought one in at the same time/place, about 30 feet down in 50 feet of water. We thought we were finally going to hit 'em hard, right after dusk, but that was it. The radio chatter only claimed 6 or 7 total fish taken off Grand Haven that evening. At least we didn't get skunked.

I think it was my special chum recipe..:xzicon_sm

We fished Monday PM in the North blow in 3-4 ft breakers and motored out farther than I wanted (150 FOW) to the north nets. Trolled downwind and had one rip the first rod in 30 down on a Tomic green / chrome. Couldn't get a bite for another hour after that - dispy 150 back on 2 with green SD and pickled sunshine. 15 lb hen. Had another rigger hit just before sundown and that was it. We finished in about 100 - 95 FOW as the ferry went by us at 10:15PM. Fortunately the waves came down so the ride in was decent. No dusk to dark bite....wierd. Had several marks up high but could not get them to go. Water was very warm from 40 ft up (upper 60's to even 72). Sounded like a few were caught in close (50 FOW in), but not as busy as I expected. Once the rain and wind give up this week I expect that it will go off.

Have been fishing here in grand haven all week. Fish have been anywhere from 50-150 fow. Spin Doctors with blue and green and blue and green flies have been hot. J-Plugs in green glow and yellow tail have also worked good on 10 color. Today the wind is terrible and does not look good for tonight. Maybe one more trip in the am before we head for home.
