Just an FYI for any that may not already know this...

At the launch last night, boats and trailers stacked up, I'm trying to hurry, unload the boat, go to start her, don't seat the key fully and nearly twist her off in the ignition. Needless to say, she wouldn't start, so I loaded her back on the trailer and headed for home.:sad::sad: Real bummer.

Tried to have a key made (Mercury) at the loacl hardware - No luck, Tried Home Depot (thinking a tractor key balnk) - No luck. Went to BPS this morning - have to go to the service center M-S - No luck. Stopped by Skipper Buds Marina - No luck, they don't even know where to get one. Finally ended up at Freeway Marina on US23 and Thompson and discovered that they come already made. After parting with my hard earned $2.49 I headed for home. :):):) Elated.

Time to go fishing. Just had no idea finding a replacement ignition key would have been so difficult. Hope my trials save someone else.

Flash :coolgleam

Merc outboard motors only have about 100 keys to choose from... been there, done that, got handed a ring with about 100 keys on it... got it right on the 3rd try!

I just lost the key to my old 73 Evenrude 50 hp. Can I expect to be that lucky?

If you have the number off the key, then I would suspect yes. On mine, there was a 3 digit number that the clerk used to identify and select the correct key.

Thanks Flash, but as I lost the key I don't have the number. A friend told me
some of the OMC controls have the number inside-I'll check.

2 keys is a good idea. I keep an extra one hid on my boat. I also keep an extra plug onboard.:)
