I have been trapping woodchucks, possums, and coons to assure a sweet corn crop this year in my suburban setting. After a couple of days something is digging up the carcasses? What will do this? Will coyote dig up carcasses?
Thanks,
Roger

Anything! Coons, Possumns, -- dogs! Had the same problem about a year ago.

You might want to be careful about advertising that you are trapping coons out of season. Not trying to start anything, but I think the damage 'control laws' could be grey in this area.

Yes if the coons are doing or about to do damage they are legal. I hate this definition however because IMHO coons are always "about to do damage" But I doubt the CO's see it the same way. I wish they would be more specific. With that being said I beleive there is a wide variety of animals that may dig up the buried carcasses heck it could be domestic dogs as well.

Thanks for the replies. I felt the need to start trapping nuisance animals after losing my entire sweet corn crop last year. I had 15 rows of sweet corn approx. 50' rows. That's a lot of sweet corn. Picked exactly 6 ears of corn and 2 days later it was all gone.
Don't want to do anything illegal so thanks for the heads up.
I may call the DNR for clarification. I was thinking that garden pests were always in season, but maybe not. I have 7' plastic deer fencing up to keep out the deer but it is hard to keep out the coons, possums and woodchucks.
Thanks again.

Didn't mean to sound harsh in my other post, but like merganzer, I think the law could be interpreted differently depending on the LEO. Does the law mean damage to buildings? yard/garden? crops? what about trees? . Don't think most LEO's would have a problem, but if the traps were not in the garden etc ... you might find one that has issue with it. Maybe I'm just parinoid.

On the flip side, I've had the same problem ... and done the same thing. Just didn't draw attention to the situation.;)

I have buried a few woodchucks around the edge of the garden after live trapping them and 2 or 3 days later they were laying on top of the ground. So I buried them again a little deeper and the next day the same thing. Have trapped a possum since then and haven't had the problem lately so maybe SHE was the problem.
P.S. My sweet corn is almost ripe and so far I haven't lost any.

I had a friend that burried a sheep and it got dug up a couple of days later.
