Well, I did something not so smart and put my Quantum spinning reel in the sand last week and the sand got in everywhere. I took the real completely apart and washed off all of the sand along with the grease. I re-greased and oiled it with eagle claw reel grease and oil but the reel is not even close to as smooth as it was with the original grease. What should I use to get the smoothness back. I also had one peace left over after putting the reel back together. It is a little angled peace of metal, 30deg or so, maybe 1/16 wide and 3/8 long with a hook on one end. Any ideas. Thanks.

Been there, done that. I didn't have any parts leftover but the reel was JUNK after that. I'm curious as well to see some responses though.

i'd say it has something to do with that little angled piece. i save all my parts breakdowns. good luck

The smoothness has nothing to do with the angled piece. I think the angle piece came from the bail arm when I took it apart but I'm not sure. The reel still worked fine, except for the sand grains, when the angle piece flew out. That is why I don't know where it goes because it shot out of the reel when I was taking it apart and I didn't see where it came from.

when you out casting, just dip your reel into the water for a few seconds to get everything loose, it always works for me

I probably should have tried that. The reel works fine now, it's just not as smooth. It was only a 50 dollar reel and I didn't like it that much anyways. It is just my back up reel. I think I will try some different kinds of grease because I don't think the eagle claw stuff is ment for a total makeover.

Try this site, select the model you have, then click details.
It lays out the parts diagram for you. Good Luck.

Also I came across a website that gave some great cleaning instructions for your reels. Spinning, baitcasting etc.
I used them to go thru all my Reels last winter, I will see if i can find it. However ,I would first take the spool off the reel and then turn the handle and see if the smoothness returns. If it does, the spool and spool shaft needs to be cleaned again. If not, the problem is in the handle-gear mechanics.

I agree with duckman use the hot sauce, its made for quantum reels and also i had the same problem with a line counter reel( took it apart and had a left over piece). If you have another quantum reel, open it up and see where that part fits. Oh yeah they sell the sauce at bass pro shop.

Tie it on the end of the line and see if it catches anything. Might have to put a minnow or a piece of earthworm on the hook part first, though.

I looked at the part diagram for a quantum reel that looks a lot like mine and I found out the angle piece is a kicker lever. It came from where I thought it did. It is item #26.http://www.tackleservice.com/images/Diagrams/KineticPTiA1020_partslist.pdf I also added more grease and oil so the reel is pretty much back to normal. I’m thinking of getting some hot sauce for it also.

There was a thread here not that long ago on the topic of reel maintenance. Can't find it right now, though. Some people liked the Quantum, others liked white lithium grease.
Some of these people take their reels completely apart, clean, and lube every year or two. None of my reels have ever been apart, so I think I should learn to do this. And since my eyes aren't what they use to be I took the little pamphlet into work and blew up the little exploded (sorry) view, so now it's on an 8 1/2 x 11.
Now if I could just find some time.
This sight doesn't have one, but Ohiosportsman.com has a "Tackle Talk" forum for things like this. I'm registered on that site as "Wolverine".
