I will be using my mossberg 500 with ventalated rib barrell. It has screw in choke tubes. My questions are Can i Shoot steel shot threw the chock tubes i all ready have? (improved modafide) Or is there a specail tube i have to buy for steel shot? And the last question is what size shot and should it be 3inch shells.

Thanks

I would NOT use a improved modified for steel sjot. Every one that I have says NOT FOR USE WITH STEEL SHOT. I use a modified. Modified should give you your best pattern but, you should test it out at the range. I use #2 3 1/2" for the early season and BB 3 1/2" in the late season. It is up to you what length of shell you use. I killed alot of geese just using a 3" shell.
If you really want your best pattern buy a pattern master and you will be very please with the results.

You really need to pattern your gun to know how the chokes work with the steel shot. You will also find out where your gun shoots. ie. High and to the right or right on etc. This is all great info when gunnin at geese.

good luck:)

I use an improved cylinder. In the 2 2/3" with bb shot. Now that they have come out with the other shot you may consider spending a few more dollars and getting the Remington hevi-shot. #1 or #2 shot would be fine. I use high velocity steel 1500 fps Federal or Kent. I have a 3 1/2" chamber but shoot the geese in the decoys. You dont need all that magnum power at my hunts. I dont pass shoot. A new chock tube is the next thing to consider. Only about 15.00 or so for the factory ones. A little more for the custom ones on the market now. They are made for the steel shot. I bought the tubes to shoot steel due to the amount of shooting I have done in the past. I cant afford to shoot a case of the high priced shells. I have fine results from steel shot. I say, "you can only kill them so dead". The modified chock is what I like to call an all around type chock. It will work for about anything
