Hey guys,

I have a 1972 25 hp Johnson hand till outboard. The model number is 25E72R and the serial number is E3611552.

Here's the problem:

I broke the metal spring that recoiled the pull cord. I removed the part and need to replace it. However, I didn't get a manual when I bought the boat so I don't know where to get the part number.

Another thing that I had noticed awhile back was that my motor has an electric start, but its never been hooked up. I hooked up the starter relay to a battery and I got the starter to crank. What I'm looking for now is the push button start part.

I'm not sure of a good place to buy these parts. Ideally I'd like to find a place online to make sure I am getting the best price, but before I search around I need to know what parts I'm looking for.

Additionally, I'd like to get a manual for my motor. Is there a good place to get a reprint of the manual?

man...I'm being needy today!

OK....after surfing for a bit longer, I found out the part number for the spring, however, I don't know where to buy the part from. Does anybody buy parts online? If I'm best served to buy them from a brick store, can anybody recommend a good dealer somewhere on the eastside???

I think I am going to go to "carls boats and motors" in SCS and see where that takes me. It looks like the parts are relatively easy to put in (actually the spring may be a pain getting it under pressure).

I also found a place to buy the literature:

The only problem is I don't want to spend $100 or more to buy the info. Anywhere I can find it for free or at least a reasonable charge?

Thanks again.

The Selock manuals are a nice reference to have. But, they will not typically give you part #s. Might also be able to find one at your local library.

As far as the recoil spring, night also check with NAPA. Sierra makes the parts for NAPA. Sierra is the largest aftermarket marine parts supplier/mfg. Some things I'd rather have OEM (if available) but it shouldn't matter on the recoil spring. Those springs can be a beotch to put in.

Try this site. Just pick the blue parts diagram button when it comes up.
Then you go through the menus to narrow it down to you motor. Once you chosse the part it will tell you where you can get the part near you zipcode.

Sweatyspartan,

here's a great source for a manual and parts list for that particular motor. SELOC manuals are at best usable for troubleshooting and minor maintenance work. But for detailed instructions you need a service manual for your particular motor. A few years ago my dad gave me a '61 Evinrude 40 that belonged to my grandfather. I went to Ken Cook and got the exact manual and parts list and breakdown. They weren't "cheap" but were WELL worth the cost! Here's a link to the info for your motor....

The set I bought for my '61 Rude was very nice and I was so glad that I had them. Once you find the part information you're looking for, check with Northwestern Boat Company in Southfield. They carry lots of parts for older OMC motors. They're on Ten Mile Rd. just east of Northwestern.

Good luck!
