We are heading to the UP on Thursday morning. We will be bringing up the kayaks, and will be doing some rustic camping, and of course a lot of fishing.

We know a bunch of good lakes, but, want to try some new ones. We are targeting basically anything, but i guess smallies, pike, eyes, even panfish, and should be doing some trout fishing as well. Any recommendations, in the central/western UP, good for kayaking??

We are looking at a bunch of new lakes. 2 of the bigger, well known ones we are thinking of trying are Lake Michigamme, and Lake Independence. Both will be a bit harder to fish with just a kayak, so, we will probably only fish a part of those lakes. Any tips on where to start on those lakes??

Thanks a lot...

craig lake and crooked lake in criag lake st. park in baraga co. both have good smallmouth walleye and perch, you have to carry your canoe a few miles to get to crooked lake. Also the sylvania wilderness area near the wisconson border has several great lakes. I caught a 8lb smallmouth and a 9lb walleye out of crooked lake in sylvania a few years ago

You could kayak on the Grand Sable near Grand Marais. I have seen kayaks and small fishing boats on it. I have also fished the lake a couple of times from shore and caught some smallies. There are northerns, rainbows, and lake trout also. It is a deep lake going to 85 feet and is 630 acres. The depth change is extremely dramatic. It goes from shallow to deep very fast and is usually quite calm. http://www.fishweb.com/maps/alger/grandsablelake/
Good luck.

stump field at east end of independence for pike..in front of launch area for bass....20 foot breakline on northend for eyes....perch can be had about anywhere at west end where you find weed.....lake michigamme this time of year? my experience has been eyes and skis...try the islands in center of lake on sloping sides for the eyes.....ramseys,harveys etc.....kayaking?..try bone, st kathryn, ellen, mary , michigamme river between way dam/peavy pond, greenwood, dead river basin, forest lake(aka autrain basin or cleveland cliffs basin), worm(vermillac), parent//and just for the fun deer lake basin..launch sucks(perfect for kayak though), artificials only catch n release only(mercury contamination)..but you will catch more walleye in 1 hour than you will normally catch in one day......genes pond and witch lake also can be productive

HA, we know those areas well. The last time we went up there, about 6 years ago, we tried both Craig lake and sylvania, both were awesome and we plan on hitting those lakes again. Usually whenever someone ask for a good UP lake for kayaks, like i was asking, i recommend those 2 locations like you did for me.... Sylvania was INSANE smallie fishing, but, we were the only ones really getting into them(a couple other groups around). We caught hundreds of huge smallies over 3-4lbs, up to 6lbs.
