Kings, Pinks and Steel starting to show up in fishable numbers. Pulling plugs seemed to work best for us. Try the remote gravel stretches. Fresh fish showing up every day.
Fishing-pressure was low.

WO WO WO there in kool when do u think the run is going to be and there is pinks this year. I thought they only ran every other year in odds.

The best is yet to come. According to my sources, the DNR shock boat did the river yesterday with a 100 fish target and never had to go above Charbonneau's.
I'm not sure about the odd year with Pinks. I do know, that they run every even year in Alaska.

According to the DNR this odd year thing used to be quite true. However over the years they have proliferated so well,that they run just about as good on even years too.

Do they plant pinks in the Ausable, or do they just stray from other rivers?
Hope they get their shocking done before I come up this weekend! Any body know what they do with all those fish?

That's cool that the chins are in but I have never heard anybody talk about Pinks in the Ausable. I'll havta make my first Eastside trilogy trip of the year next Monday. I have a feeling that I may be able to hit a few fresh chins.

The shocking is used strictly to monitor the run and the condition of the fish. As far as I know the fish survive the ordeal and are released. I'm not sure, but I don't think that Pinks were stocked there. Years ago I talked to Fran up in Alpena and she told me that they were introduced by mistake. If I remember correctly, they were on there way to Lake Superior on the Canadian side and the boat had problems with aeration and dumped the fish in Lake Huron!!?????? Not 100% sure on that one. We have caught them in the Au Sable for quite a few years.

If those fish can survive being shocked, netted, thrown into a hold in the bottm of their boat where they lay stacked on top of one another for who knows how long, it would amaze me! I watched them run my favorite hole last oct. Once wasn't enough, thay had to do it twice. While I was fishing it! I had just caught and released two small steelies in that same hole. Might as well have taken them home for dinner as I'm sure the DNR killed them! Needless to say I headed to another river! I really hope they don't do that to me again this year! Seems like they could guage the fish runs another way!

I sure hope you guys don't think that I approve of their monitoring. Remember the Muskeegon at Newaygo about 10-11 years ago? They killed 10 miles of river with rotenone. That was for monitoring purposes also. I fished that stretch all the time. There wasn't a fish in there until the Lake-run fish showed up. My post was strictly to inform about the fresh run.

Yeah I might be hitting the Ausable sometime between Sun.-Mon. but that's only if my first two stops are unsucessful.

Yes I do remember the retonone, or is it rhetonone, oh well. I knew it was a bad idea as soon as I heard they were going to do it! I think it was only suposed to kill the fish in a one mile or so stretch but ended up going all the way to newago. Oops.
