View Full Version : SPRO Bronzeye frog vs. Scumfrog
After a season and a half of testing I have finally come to the conclusion that I like Spro's frogs better than the Southern Lure Company's Scumfrog.
1) The Spro frog casts much further, with less effort than a Scumfrog. A decided advantage when shorebound or wading.
2) The legs on the SPRO frog are much more lifelike and durable, and less prone to tangling.
3) The hooks on the SPRO are considerably sharper out of the box, and less prone to dulling, or straightening by "suprise" incidental catches like muskie.
4) The bodies on the SPRO frogs are more durable. Both can be repaired with a hot bodkin, but the Spros hardly ever need it.
The SPROs cost more than double the price of a Scumfrog, but with all the advantages, I am a believer. If only they would come out with a popper like Southern Lure makes.
It's a sacrifice, but I will resume testing this evening, just to make sure I am right. ;)

Eleven bucks for a plastic frog?!!!
Despite the advantages, I'll stick to the Scummers at about three bucks a copy. At that price I can afford to just throw out one here or there if it becomes damaged. :)

I have several of both... but have had little luck with either this season for some reason.
SPROS are $7.99 at BPS JP.

Have both, but at that price there's a reason why I have 3-4 scums for every SPRO.
The scumfrog's softness I believe actually makes it a bit easier to get good hooksets as the fish can really clamp down on it. The harder body of the SPRO has cost me some fish and some money I'm sure.
Both good products, IMO the 2 best on the market, but I'll still stick with the scums.

Oh OK, that's a little more reasonable. I went to their web site and it states that they are $10.99. At least this season it doesn't really matter much to me anyway because I haven't wet a line since early last fall. Maybe I'll get out at least once this year.

im a beleiver in scum frogs. this past weekend i fished big and little whitfish i had well over 20 strikes and landed 5-6 nice bass. i had fish jumping 3 foot out of the water. for the price i think the scums are a good deal.

Work those frogs with the rod tip in a position where you can give the fish line when it takes the bait. Sloooowly count to three while reeling up the slack, when you feel the fishes weight, set the hook. You should be hooking at least 90% of them that way. If you set the hook too early you miss most of the strikes. It's amazing how long they will hold a piece of plastic.

I have tried both and I have to say, I like the scum frog better. I love the way the spro frog looks, but the plastic is just too hard. I can go out and catch a dozen bass on a scum frog and maybe miss one or two fish. I tried the spro frog and couldn't keep them on the hooks. The problem I have with the scum frogs is that the plastic around the hook shank always rips and then my frog goes from floating to sinking.:dizzy: I just can't win with either one.

Not sure about other brands... but the Sizmic frogs float, and really make a commotion coming across the water!

I have tried both... and I have better luck with the scumfrog. The spro frog does cast good... but with a lot of line out, I don't think I get as good of a hookset. Also the spro frog feels like an old rubber boot! They make a SPRO® Bronzeye Frog Jr, I have not tried that yet. I was wondering if maybe it is a little softer? So for now, the scumfrog is what I have on the end of my pole. I like the white with the green markings. And make sure it is the popper style. That extra 'spit' on the twitch is the magic.:D:D

Yes, there are a few colors of the Sizmic frogs that float. I have used many different brands and I have came to the conclusion that the Zoom Horny Toads are the best frogs on the market. The action and durability seem to surpass the others. If you think you get a lof ot bubblin coming across the water with the Sizmic wait til you use the Zoom brand. I liked the Sizmic frogs, but they are a bit harder and tougher to hook fish with, not to mention they are lighter which results in shorter casting ability. My money is on the Zoom Horny Toads for sure.

I’ve been wanting to get some top-water frogs, especially with the amount of weeds and such in some of the lakes I fish. I’ve seen the zoom frogs and scum frogs on TV and I think I will give both a try this year. Thanks for the tips guys.
