I have a flowering cherry tree in my yard and one of the branches looks to be dead. Do you suppose with the hot weather and lack of rain that it would be okay to cut that branch off? What causes just one branch to die?

Usually you can cut a dead branch any time but we still usually wait until the tree is dormant. The biggest problem cutting branches is if you cut and it is still even a tiny bit green then you are just inviting insects to invade the tree. Of course you can paint the cut if you want but still best to wait. What causes one branch to die? Hard to tell but then, what causes some leaves to die on any plant or tree?

If its not all rotted, save it for smoking ;) works great for salmon, also you can soak chunks in water, then put them in foil shaped like hershey kisses with top open a little, then put in gas or charcoal grill and get great smoke for anything your grilling.:D
