Just ordered some Hawbaker's Widow Maker 800 from FNT, anyone had any success with this on fox/yotes? Making a transition from water trapping to land trapping, getting ready for season now, any info or tips greatly appreciated.
Before I am asked, yes I am a member of the MTA, and I am not sure if I can make the convention yet...waiting on a work schedule.

I like it for Late into the season. It has a lot of calling power. When use it early season use it very carefully.

What would you reccommend for early -mid season trapping then?

Location is more important than the type of lure you use. Any major lure makers products will catch fur for you. I use a lot of Grawes and Junes lures. Mark and I are friends and Ardel Grawe helped me out alot when I was a kid getting started.
Grawes lures tend to be a little stronger lure than Marks and I use less lure at the sets in the fall or the animals will roll at the set. Thats what Dave was warning you about the Hawbakers 800.
I use more food and curiosity lures early in the year and gland lures later. I don't think this is a big deal but it's hard for me to change when I make up my mind on how things should work. Give the animal a few differant looks and some time and most sets will get worked over. Try differant sets and lures and you'll figure out what works for you.

Any lure makers lure will do. Like Griff said only reason I told you to use it carefully early season is the rolling effect.
I personally use O'Gorman, Grawe, Lenon, Northwest Predator, Carmen, Forget, Derrick lures, RK, and some home brews.
Hey Griff,
Can you still find Grawes Pacer #3 anywhere??? I have 2 oz. left

Dave thats a name from the past. Give them a call and see if they can still make it for you. Many years ago I was told they would make up what you wanted in quart batches. I'll split one with you. 218-643-3292

Dave and Griff have given you absolute golden advice. Location is more important than anything else, any commercial canine lure will work, and dont use too much lure at your set. I will try to add a couple more tips that I consider paramount...
You may be wondering exactly how much lure is correct or too much. This question doesnt have a concrete answer, but before the winter arrives, I'd say that you should never leave more than a kidney bean-sized amount of lure total, at any set. One-half that is more like it. I know when I first started canine trapping I had the "more is better" mentality...and did not catch a fraction of what I do now, after cutting way back on lure. Have you ever noticed that the lure manufacturers recommend really tiny amounts of lure to be used? You'd think they want you to use alot so you will buy their lure more often. Well, they want you to catch alot of fur and they know that a tiny dab will catch you more canines than a huge glob. I honestly dont think you can use too little, only too much.
The other advice I'll give you...that I consider a cardinal rule with canines...is make every set different in a given area. Change up the lures and set styles at every set. After you move at least a couple miles away you can start the pattern all over. I carry about a half-dozen types of lure with me in the field, along with a few different kinds of bait. The reason for this is so that I can change-up alot on a given property, not because certain lures are better than others.
There are probably hundreds of canines trapping tips out there, but the ones in this thread so far would be in my top 5.
Good luck this season! ;)

Thanx guys! Started trapping last year and did the muskrat/water trapping. Did decent, I believe somewhere around 270 or so, wanted to try something different this fall in conjuction with rat trapping (we have so many here not even funny). Had a great time last year first season and all, figured get all geared up and try some land trapping for canines. Thank you soo much for the advice!

Soggy, listen and learn as much as possible from those guys who have answered your post. They are experts and bring in a very respectable amount of fur each season. One thing I would like to add to this thread that hasn't been touched on is Urine. Along with lures and glands, Urines are a very important part of a Canine trappers bag of tricks. When it comes to Gray Fox, I have personally caught more than half at sets with nothing more than urine. Like the others have said, it's all about location and it's hard to beat a nice trail and a urine post set for Fox.
