Hey Fellas, I need some help with a problem I am having with my 30 horse 1982 Chrysler outboard. My problem is with it smoking. I have done quite a bit of work on this motor. Rebuilt the carb. and I changed the head gasket thinking it might be a leak of water into combustion chamber. But it did not take care of the smoking problem. Here is what is happening. My exhaust comes out of the bottom near the prop. When it is in the water it is smoking really bad and leaving a kind of white creamy mixture in the water. When I lift the motor out of the water and run it I don't get any where near the smoke. It starts really easy and idles good but smokes up a storm in the water. I NEED SOME HELP:help: Thanx for anyones imput. PARSON

It could be a combination of steam and 2 stroke oil. My 8 merc kicker is a smelly thing too but that's the price of a 2 stroke.
It also gives off the white crap you are talking about.
It runs fine I might add.

Does anyone else out there ever have this problem. Or is it something as one post says, have to live with. Or is there an answer to this smoking problem. Need some more imput. I use 50-1. Would changing that mixture by using a little less oil help.:help:

Do NOT run your motor with less than the recommended oil in your fuel!!!

Have you checked the impeller to make sure it is good and getting water to the top to cool off the engine.

Did this just start recently? Or, has it been doing this forever?

Are you sure your 2-cycle oil is outboard rated ... TCW-3 rating?
Have you tried fresh gas and new oil?
How many lbs compression on the cylinders?
Does it 'smoke' the same cold or warmed up?

I would definatly look into your water pump system. I will tell you one thing though every old chrysler I have seen smokes like mad.

I do. My johnson is VRO. The vro system constantly changes the mix ratio in the motor. At idle the boat runs more like 100:1. If you run wide open all the time I would suggest keeping your mix ratio the same, but if you do alot of trolling like myself, 50:1 is a little high. Due to the era of my motor, the VRO's were know to have problems. I ripped off the vro system and run 75:1. No issues, it actually runs better.

Hey Folks,
Thanx for all the imput. THe impeller is working great and pumping plenty of water. I am also using TCW 3 oil in mixture. Also I checked the compression and both at 122. The bottom one was lower so changed head gasget. I am beginning to think it is the nature of the beast. Just purchased older pontoon motor. Actually runs pretty descent since I rebuilt the carb.

It can pump plenty of water out of the pee pee hose but not get enough up to the top cylinder and cause steam.

Try switching to a higher end oil, evinrude xd-50 does wonders for motors that smoke a lot. Try a pint in your next 6 gallon can and see what you get. Also make sure the choke isnt sticking etc.

If you replaced the head gasket, where were the water passages...on a lot of outboards you can tell how well a water pump is working with knowledge of where the water passages are and how hot the area gets. For example, on my Chrysler, the head will get pretty hot, because it only has one small water passage, but the rest of the engine should stay nice and cool....if it doesn't, there is water leaking by the plate in the impeller.

Hey Fellas,
My engine head stays nice and cool, it has maybe 4-6 water ports around pistons. Plenty of water getting through system. Everything mentioned is running fine or with no problems. I am going up to the lake this weekend and will run it and see how it will be since I put new head gasget on it. Ran it real good after installin headgasget but didn't take it out. Was too windy for the pontoon. Sportsfisherman SVC suggested trying an Evenrude oil XD 50. I don't remember seeing that oil in any of the sport shops or other fishing tackle and the Marts. Anyone have any ideas about where to get this oil. I would try anything at this point. I will let you'll know how things go when I get back sometime next week.:D
