I'd like to rig up a kill switch on my generator with about a 20 foot cord. I use it at my hunting camp, and we all fight about who has to go out and shut it off at night :gaga: . Can this be done easily? Where would I get supplies? Thanks!

It's a Honda EM 3000c like the one above.

tie a piece of string to the sparkplug wire and pull when it's time for bed:D

Or you could rig up a remote start/kill. Depending on the gen set you have there may be a pre-made kit complete with a solenoid for the choke. I have a Honda 3000ei and having just built a power house for it, I plan on installing the remote kit this winter.

on a more serious note, if the kill switch is a toggle you might be able to splice a wire the length you need to the leads and re-connect the switch on the new wire? you would just have to wind up the new wire when you move it. you can get a new switch from home depot that would fit into a pastic box to keep it protected. match the gage of wire that goes to the kill switch. hope this might help

A cost effective method is to get a regular wall switch. Knife in some romax to the geterator into the soil and wire to the coil or sparkplug wire. The other end of the wall switch would go to ground. Whala, you have a kill switch.

I don't think Honda makes one that's compatible with the model that I have.
I get the concept, but I'm a little uneasy when it comes to cutting wires on the generator. I know it needs to be done, but you really only get one shot at getting it right. Anyone have any pics that might help? I'm sure others have thought of doing this also.

Several ways of doing it and I wouldn't cut into wires if at all possible.
If you have an existing switch, one side will be ground and the other will be from the coil. You can add a wire to the coil terminal. For the ground, you can make your own with a tent stake or piece of copper, brass or steel rod.
I haven't tried it before but you may be able to strip a good length of romax and wind it around the spark plug wire two or three times and then ground that out to turn it off. Electricity takes the path of least resistance.

The grounding of the coil goes back to non-CDI ignition systems. A wire is still grounded but it runs to the CDI box. Yes, you can tap into this wire, running a parallel system to the key. One wire to ground and one to the wire on the CDI iginition. Just follow the wire from the key back to the CDI box.

:o gave away my age :o
You are correct though the key or kill switch is the place to hook into.

OK.................Here is where it starts to get WAY over my head. There is no key, and I have no idea what a CDI box is.
I'm more of a "cut the red wire & and wire nut it to the white wire" kinda guy    !!!
I'll try to take a few close-up pictures around the on/off switch tonight. Maybe with pictures some of you "electroheads" can bring it down to my level:D . Wish you all lived closer......It wold be a whole lot easier to buy a 12-pack:coolgleam .

I was just up your way last week.
Follow the kill switch wires, one end will go to the electrical components, the other will go to ground. To test put a stake in the ground touch or attach a wire to it and touch the wire terminal you think you need to hook up to. You have a 50 - 50 chance.

When you get up this way again, let me know. I'll round up some wire and get a 12 pack chillin' :D  :D !!!

No...... See my post in the trappers forum entitled "Bummed Out".
I missed you there last year. I met a few MS members who mentioned that you were there, and I was going to look you up, but a storm blew in and I headed for home. Maybe next year.

Black wire that goes to your switch when grounded will kill ignition. I verified this on my Honda powerwasher, (after soaking myself because I couldn't turn it off until I grounded the unplugged wire), my Honda generator uses same wire. You will probably have a green wire going to a ground tab, plus a yellow wire for the low oil shutoff.
