Hey Guys:
I'm planning a trip to the island for the weekend before the fourth. Does anyone have any info on how the fishing is on Drummond? I am taking the little guys fishing and would like for them to catch a few bass, perch or pike. Any help would be great!

There is a good sports shop in Detour almost at the ferry to Drummond. Their website is nocosports.com. In the past they have been helpful with current info. There is also a couple of sportsshops on the islanddon't recall their names but the drummond island tourist bureau site would get you their name/number. You may be hitting the annual Herring run which is usually not good for fishing for anything but herring. good luck my best luck has always been in Potaggasing (sp) bay and scotts bay.

Just returned from a 4 day trip to Drummond last week. My ol'man lives on the island so I'm up there quite a bit. Myself and two of my buddies were targeting the smallies on this particular trip. Caught 80 between the 3 of us in two days of actual fishing. The bite was non-stop. Bass are in post spawn mode and eating just about anything. Jerkbaits (gold/black nitro minnow), tubes (smoke, pumpkin, laminated amber), spinnerbaits (chartruese (sp) w/gold blade) caught all fish. Target the points of the islands, roughly 6-8 ft of water...the fish are there. We worked the points with jerkbaits and spinnerbaits till we found fish, and then slowed down and followed up with tubes. It was my personal best weekend ever...the fish seemed to be everywhere. The locals were targeting the gators with good success. Most were drifting but I did see a couple trollers out there. Try the area near Paw Pt. on Scott's bay. Water depth is 5-7 ft and the temp was in the low to mid 60's when we were there. Didn't hear or see anything regarding the perch bite, although I did hear that it has been getting better with the increased control of the cormorant population. We had a couple good mayfly hatches while we were there, so I bet that the herring run might be a little early this year. This usually happens right around the fourth of July as the gentleman stated in the previous post. If they are in, you should be able to find good consentrations of them in the Sturgeon Bay / Pigeon Cove area, as well as near Harbor Island. These fish are soooooo fun to catch, and your little ones will have an absolute ball if you can get on'em. Light tackle...tear drop, wax worm, and a spit shot is all you need. They fight like a bass...and on ultra light tackle....AWESOME!!!!

Hope you have a great time! Let me know if you need any additional info, I can point you in the right direction if you have any questions.

WATCH THE ROCKS!!!! :tdo12:

Keep plenty of distance between the points. The water is low, and some rocks that have never been a problem in the past are ready to swallow your outdrive. Be sure that you know where your going when traveling between the islands, some area's are disasters waiting to happen.

Big M is right about catching the Herring. They are a blast to catch on any tackle but it is a real fight on an ultra light. If you see a pod of boats they might be sitting on a school of herring. We try to find fish away from the pack so were not so tight w/ the other boats. We like to use may flies on teardrops for them.
Most important-watch out for the rocks! There are alot of shoals just under the surface out there. You can go from 50' of water to 2' of water in seconds. I would recommend getting a map of the depths around the island. This has saved our butts on many occasions. I heard that one of the marinas on the island fixed 40-50 lower units last year alone.

Last year we did well this time of year in Third bay just east of the Fort Drummond Marina. The best source of information on the island for fishing is Rick at the bait shop next to Wazz's. You will find it on your right hand side about 15 minutes from the ferry on 134. Rick is pretty reliable for information.

Well, I managed to outfish the two 10-year olds I was fishing with, but narrowly escaped being defeated by a 6-year old girl. My three 6-inch perch outdid her two 4-inch lunkers! A good time was had by all, and that's the name of the game. Other fishermen said they were not catching much, the DeTour sports shop guy echoed their statements. Rick at Johnson's Sport Shop is a good guy, but may be a little optimistic when it comes to giving fishing reports!

Smallmouth
All over Scott's Bay. Rocky points and submerged weeds. Bang the points with Mr Twisters or #5 Rapala Shad Raps. If you aren't hitting rocks your not running it deep enough. 12 to 14 feet of water count down a jig and slow retrieve or crank the Rapala's down and run them just above the weeds.

Walleye
Bottom bouncers and crawler, 13-15 ft.
Shad raps trolled

Cisco
Grape Island. Black or Chartruse

MayFly hatch is on so Walleye are tough.

Just got back from a week on drummond. Didn't fish as much b/c we were working on the in laws cottage but did manage a few trips. Herring were in and caught a bunch, even off the end of the dock. First time I did that. Caught a few smallies and 1 small perch. Made 1 trip into the big lake and went 2 for 3. 1 laker and 1 nice 10# king with a hitch hiker(lamprey) and missed 1 more. Hope to be back in a month for the DI salmon tourney and do more fishing.
