Finally got the boat out again after a couple of weeks. My first rigger went off just as I was setting the second one and my fiance got her first taste of a screaming big lake king. While she was fighting that, the second rigger went off with another screamer. Since there were only two of us in the boat, netting and fighting was a bit of challenge but we pulled it off. Both fish were pushing 18 to 20 lbs....nice and fat! Not a bad way to start out, considering it was barely light out.
After that...well...had to work to put 3 more in the boat. Two of them were in the 10 to 12 lb range and the last one was a 16 lb'er.
Blue dolphins and DW Mean Green took the first two fish on riggers. The last three were on a monkey puke run on a full lead core.
59 to 65 feet of water was the magic number today....

Outstanding, thousandcasts.
That box would have put you in the upper echelon of the tourney standings, from what I heard. Lots of boats, both pro and amateur, weighed only a couple fish yesterday.

I didn't even know there was a tourney going on yesterday until I was going out of the harbor and saw the Great Lakes Angler boat. I knew one of the guys in it and he hollered over and asked if I was in the tournament. What tournament? Yeah...I thought about that as I hauling my box off the boat!!! Trouble is, if I'd have entered, I'd have been hard pressed to get a "shaker"! :D
I was due for a good day, though. The only other times I was able to get out this year netted me a big skunk! I was more relieved than anything to come in with 5 nice fish!!! Thought I'd "lost it" ;)

I noticed that all the boats were ganged up right in front of the pierheads so I went south a couple miles and fished an area where there wasn't any boats around...seemed to help in the early going.

I like to get away from the traffic too. Today I did it by heading north and fishing on the inside of the crowd. Good Luck and see you out there.

The best fishing is always when a person doesn't go out!
Had you went yesterday, the biggest fish would've been a 3 pound greaser followed by a half pound shaker. At least that's what happens to me ;)
Most of the time, that is...
