I haven't done much fishing in the past 20 years, but I now have a small boat and 4 kids that want to get out and fish. I am looking for some small lakes in Northern Allegan County, with public access. I guess the target species would be gills and crappie, and if a some bass presented themselves I'd be for that also. At some point I'd like to get after some Northern's but want to get the kids used to fishing. I know there are alot of small lakes around, Miner Lake, Green Lake and Dumont Lake to name a few. But other than those are there any other good lakes to hit.

Also what techniques should we be using catch some gills. Should we be fishing on the edges of the shallows with a bobber, or do we look for deeper water and do more of a bottom fishing?

Thanks

There are a bunch of lakes around northern allegan county.

You may also want to try Baker, Payne, Cheif Noonday, Long, Gun, and several others I'm probably not thinking of right off hand. These all hold bluegills, crappies, and bass.

if you are just truely into catching some fish for the kids then I would say get some tear drops and bobbers and a couple boxes of wax worms. Travel around the weed edges and catch a lot of fish. They might be small but they should be plentiful.

Now if you are looking for bigger fish, there may not be nearly as many caught, but fish a little deeper. in the 10 foot plus out away from the weed. The fish could be on bottom or they could be suspended. If you have four or five bobbers in the water I would put each one at a different depth until you found the depth the fish are biting at. Of course you may be able to mark the fish on your fish finder as well.

Green lake is a tough lake to fish. You can catch a lot of small gills up on the flats near shore...but once you get off the edge of a drop off it drops down to about 20 feet in no time. There are some really nice gills in Green if you can find the buggers. But the bigger gills do not relate to the weeds so much out there.

The spawn on all the lakes around here is probably pretty much done as the waters are really warming up.

GOOD LUCK and POST PICTURES.

A nice lil lake that i like is selkirk lake just south of bradley, its has good bluegill fishing and some decent bass and even a few walleyes. It also has no wake untill 11 AM, after 11 though the lake is pretty busy.

Just fished Selkirk last night and caught 20 bass in 2 hours. A lot of them, but no big ones. I have probably seen 200 bass get caught in there, and literally, 2 of them were keepers. Great lake for kids though. It is in Shelbyville. Another nice, really quiet lake in that same area is Big Lake. One of my favorites, but inconsistent. I am not much of a blue gill fisherman, but I caught a 6 lb bass out there last spring.
