I may be behind on my news, but I heard a fisherman was gone missing from Manistee. Anyone have any additional info?

I just read something on the other Michigansportsman.com (no dash) that said lone male was on a 22 ft starcraft and the boat was found 30 miles west of frankfort? still unknown I guess.

They found his boat out of gas with the lines in the water......bad news. Must have fallen in. 22 Foot boat and still ended up in the water. Sad day for sure.

If you must fish by yourself, have your VHS on you and wear a PFD. :( :(

Isn't that the disease from the fish?

I personally do not fish alone.....used to when I only had the 14 ft'r and less brains. Now I only fish with a crew.

There are portable radios that will survive a dunking and hours in the water and still work? Show them to me! Wife and I put on our pfd's at the dock and wear them the whole time. We hunted til we found ones that were comfortable enough to wear the entire trip. Mesh under the arms, not hot at all.

Google Search "waterproof VHF handheld radio" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=waterproof+VHF+handheld+radio)

Tons of tehm out there... A life vest will only keep you alive so long(not very) in 50 degree water. If you cant call anyone, its like rolling the dice that someone will happen to pass by before you die..

Yes Sir Jason...I never fish alone, but we always have lifejackets accessible and a handheld radio handy...if anything happens, it's right there for us...better safe than sorry...

Too bad that on I/O's there isn't a kill switch setup like on outboards. Not that anyone of us would actually wear it.

Sorry on the VHS / VHF deal....been reading too much about VHS lately.

Dave was a very good friend of ours. My brother Larry and I have fished my hours from many ports with him. He was a true fisherman through and through. Some of you may have heard him on the radio. His boats name is "Free boat". From what I'm hearing his boat was found missing the net and 1 rod. I'm thinking he went over netting a fish. Keeping him off the water would be like trying to keep a Lab out of the lake. He would get off work on Friday and if he couldn't find riders he would drive 250 miles to Manistee and fish alone. He died doing what he loved to do. He didn't have a family except an elderly mother. He just built a new house so he could move her in and take care of her. He was one of the good ones... We're loosing too many good ones..

Please say a prayer for Dave and my brother Larry who I just lost in February to leukemia.

It looks like I'm the next to fish alone.

God, grant that I might
fish until my dying day,
And when I make my one
last cast, I most humbly pray,

When in the Lord's safe landing net
I am peacefully asleep,
That in his mercy I'll be judged
as good enough to keep.

God be with you Dave and Larry.

May God bless them Hi Ho. I feel for Dave's mother, hopefully she has support. My sincere condolencences.

I fish alone many times also and it makes you think when you hear of a guy, who was obviously no rookie, have a fatal mishap. Goes to show it can happen to anyone.

You're right. Dave was no rookie. Perhaps that's where the mistake happened. After you have done the same thing time after time a person may get sloppy. His 22' fiberglass Starcraft was a very stable boat. Equipped with remote auto pilot that could be controlled from the stern. This made it very easy and comfortable to fish alone. As I posted before, 1 rod and the net was missing. I think he went over netting a fish. Anyone who's ever netted a salmon solo knows it ain't easy. And if the auto pilot was engaged, he probably was helpless to do anything except watch his boat pull out of sight. I just hope for his mom's sake they find him soon.
