At least a dozen times I said to Dennis, this has to be a bass, a big one. Dennis would reply; “Nope, it looks like a gill.” I can count the times in my life on one hand that I netted bluegills, but on this day I used it at least 30 times and Dennis too.

The weather was perfect, we had plenty to eat and drink and we watched osprey catch fish and loons swim out in the middle of the lake. On our first pass, we hooked some fish on the beds, but most were 8 to 9 inches. Dennis was first to make contact with a big hen in the deep water and in the end, most of the big ones came from deep water.

I have had some excellent luck fishing trout this year, but this was my best day of the year as it was for Dennis. It is difficult to explain how much an 11 inch bluegill pulls when hooked in deep water, but it is awesome. We were the only ones fishing on the entire lake most of the day and I’m sure some people thought it must be a couple of girls the way we were giggling, laughing and carrying on. I even think we used a couple of fbombs in our description a few times.

Thanks to the owner for allowing us to use his gillgitter. I know he won’t be reading this, so I’ll just have to call and thank him again for his hospitality. I had so many good pictures, it was hard to choose which ones to post.

Enjoy!

Some even came on my fly rod. lol

Not a bad mess of gills.

It was getting dark and I was probably holding him to close to the camera, but it is still a nice gill.

When you get doubles like this, it is really fun. Dennis has big hands, but these gills cover them and then some.

Another double and this is no trout net.

Even some of the males were over 10". Remember Dennis is not a small man.

Okay, the last one. Mike Stevens tied me some spiders on Thursday he told me would catch nice gills. Thanks Mike!

:evilsmile
Reminds me of some I took many , many years ago near Irons off a private lake in 34FOW with full size night crawlers... our biggest was 11 3/4" and we were all liquored up and we ate 'em!
;)
My how things have changed....

Ray , Dennis -- great job and NEVER quit with those kick@z$ pictures!
Hold them up to the camera proudly , cuz if you can "lip" it - it's a gill to be reckoned with!!

Ka-RuSH 'eM!

You've got to love gills big enough for the thumb treatment. Congrats on the catch... what were those GPS coordinates?

What a day indeed, you never wish an end to days like that. I love the net picture, it didn't take you long after breaking a couple hogs off lifting them into the boat to start using it..
