Drew my first bear tag. First question, what to use---30.06 or 12 g slug (rifled barrel/scoped)? What is a reasonable distance for the pile? Also any recommendations on trail cams? Thanks.

Congrats, I also drew my first tag this year. I plan on using my 30-06 with 180gr. corlokts. Last year a friend dropped a 200 pounder in it's tracks with a 30-30 at 60 yards, so a 30-06 should do the trick.
As far as trail cams go I've never tried mine for bear yet, but I've seen them at bait sites about 10 to 12 feet in a tree angled down toward the bait.

Best of luck!

Use the the 12 ga......I have shot 3 bears 2 with my 06 and the last one with my 12 ga. after seeing the hole from the 12ga,I would never use my 06 again......What do most bear giudes use? or recommend? a 12 ga. and I would think they would know......I would set up about 30 yards if your just gun hunting.....Good luck....alot to learn about bear hunting......Mack

The more i read about weapon choices, it seems like "most" people are just using whatever dropped the bear dead in its tracks and left a huge hole in it. It may just be me, but it seems like people automatically go "over-kill" with bear just because its more of a dangerous game. Like i said it could just be me. Personaly I don't want a soup can size hole in my bear.
