Where would you go? I am looking to set up a trip to Canada for the guys in my family. There will probably be 6 of us with varying ages. Probably won't be able to do long rigorous portages as some in the group will be a bit older. Would like to target, smallies, walleyes, and pike. Fly-ins are a possibility, but would probably need to drive. Willing to drive about 10 hours from East Lansing. Not looking for the priciest destination and would probably do a modified American plan. Looking to hear from those with personal experiences at said lakes. There are so many to choose from when doing an internet search. There to be some which are better than others. Time of year would be a good piece of information as well, as I am not familiar when things get going up there. I apologize if I missed any critical information. This would be our first trip north of the border. Thanks in advance for any advice. Oh.....will not be taking a boat.

My dad and I just got back from a trip to Lake of the Woods Ontario. Its a loooong drive, 14 hours from Houghton Lake, but for my first ever fishing trip it was worth it. We stayed at Red Deer lodge (www.reddeerlodge.com) in Nestor Falls on Sabaskong Bay. No need to worry about portages as there are thousands of other places to fish (Lake of the woods itself has over 14,000 island and 65,000 miles of shoreline). There are countless areas to fish for walleye, perch, pike, crappie, muskie and smallies. One day 4 of us specifically targeted pike and ended up with 100 fish, about 90 of them pike, the rest bass and walleye. And nothing gets your heart pumping like a monster muskie coming out from the depths after your buzzbait!!

I've been to White Lake, Ont. several times. Always had a good time. Always caught fish. Choice to fish in the river or on several lakes within a short drive. Aways took our own boats and food and stayed at White Lake Lodge on 17 a few hours past Wawa. Cabins are comfy but nothing fancy. Trip took about 10 hours from Flint including stops for breakfast and lunch. Pike and walleyes with a few perch. A lake close by has trout but we never went after them. Owner Norm was always helpful with advice. There were other places to stay in the same area. Hope this helps.

I'm going to Chapleau Lodge in Chapleau, Ontario for the 8th time, this time with my almost 5yr old daughter. So, the logging road, two tracks and swampy portages are out this year and probably for the next 8 years or so, if I should be so lucky.

This lodge is on a 13mile long lake called Bordon Lake, it is a spring fed lake with it's deepest trough at 135', it has Smallies(16-18" are extremely easy to come by) Walleye, Pike, Lake Trout and Whitefish. There is a lake that the owner keeps a couple of 12'ers and lets you take a couple of his 3.5hp yamahas for the power. He shut that lake down a couple of years ago, and I don't know if he opened it back up, but that lake was LOADED with pike, nothing but Pike.

The cabins have two bedrooms with a bunk bed(full on bottom, twin on top and a single twin in each room, full kitchen with microwave and coffee maker, gas stove, it even has electric., eating area and a nice covered porch with gas grill and fish cleaning station at each cabin. Bob runs a top notch place and keeps it in excellent repair and kids under 6 are free, 7-12 are half price. Rates are fair for what you're getting. I think it's $600/wk with your own boat.

I have made many trips there with guys and wife and daughters and NEVER had a bad trip. The fishing is fantastic the scenery spectacular. No crowds the long drive is worth it. Hoping to take my Grandkids there next year.

I would talk to Hugh & Doris Khutner (sp?) who has Pellow's Cottages in Chapleau. www.canadianfishing.com. (drive to, boat to & fly-in available). Highly reccommended, straight-up.
Or Garry & Marcie Litt of Red Pine Lodge on Ivanhoe Lk near Foleyet (might be more that 10 hours from E Lansing). www.vacationsincanada.com/redpinelodge/

The Moon River of Georgian Bay. Great pike fishing, nice bass, some walleye, good crappie and monster musky. Here`s a site to where we stayed at for a dozen years or so. Great place. Takes about 7-8hrs from Detroit.

I appreciate all the input thus far. I will definitely be doing some research this weekend on all of these places. Seriously...getting personal recommendations helps so much more than a pretty website.

My family and friends have gone to Frontier Lodge near Elliot Lake for many years. My dad started going in the late 60's with his friends, and it's slowly become my brothers and I and our friends, although my dad (81) and his best buddy (83) still go with us. I've personally gone almost every year since '76. It's basically lake trout/bass, and smaller walk in lakes for brookies. No pike or walleye in the immediate area, but some fly-in possibilities for them. It's 2 hours NE of the Sault, or about 7 hours from Lansing. Here's the website. PM me if you want specific info.

Pine portage is wonderful, but pretty expensive: fishthefinest.com

For the money, you just can't beat airivanhoe, this is probably exactly what you are looking for. I am heading hear for the fourth time this Friday. Good luck:

We've had great success and a great time at Birch Island Lodge near Little Current which is south of Espanola, to the east of the Soo. From the Soo it's about a 3 - 4 hour drive. The water is expansive -- McGregor Bay, Frazer Bay, Bay of Islands, Bae Finn -- and those are just the bays that are close in.

If you open their website, the initial picture is an aerial view of the area immediately around the lodge and it will give you a sense of the expansiveness of the place.

It gets my vote every time! At least until the new passport rules - just love it when the government is hard at work to protect us!

Hey there. I have some friends that own a lodge near Chapleau. It is an 8 hour drive from Lansing. It is on Como Lake. On this lake you can catch walleye, pike and lake trout, with a few smallies here and there. The lake is about 8.5 miles long with areas that are 2-3 miles wide. We go up every year and always bring home a limit of walleye and pike. The website for this lodge comolakeresort dot com. The owners are Sue and Lee Burk.

Since I live in Montreal I would recommend that you visit Lake of two Mountains in Montreal there is excellent muskie fishing going on over there.

I caught a Muskie last December that was 56.5 inches long and weighed 48 pounds.

My friends a I have been going to Kav Vee Lodge on nagagammi lake for fifteen years now .Its about a 6 hour drive from the Soo where you catch a float plane at Hornepayne for a twent minute flight. The prices are reasonable and the people that run the place are second to none. The fishing is excellant for walleyes and pike but no smallies. The lake is about 6 mileswide by three miles long so the 16ft boats and 20 horse motors are more than adequate. All of the hired help come back every year so that says something right there. They offer full american plan and housekeeping.Good luck on your search.
