I was fishing this past weekend targeting bass in a lake known for having muskies. I was using a white tube when I hooked into a large muskie I am guessing 40+ inches. I had 10lb test mono on and no steel leader. The fight didnt last long, as soon as it saw the boat it decided it was out of there. I let the fish take line but the mono didnt have a chance against its theeth.

My question is what will happen to that fish? I feel terrible that it has a lure stuck in its mouth. Will it be ok? Its not like it has 3 trebles stuck in its face??

Just a side note.. The state record was caught out of this lake by a bass fisherman on accident!!! I should have had a leader on the whole time:rant:. It was not in Michigan.

Eventually the hooks rust out and fall out, the fish should be fine.

hooks today are designed to rust very quickly, when this happens, the hook generally falls out unless it was completely swallowed. the fish should be fine, just wont eat for a day or two.

The hook will typically work itself out or rust out if hooked in the lip from what I have read in the past.

Caught a pike with a purple worm in it's mouth once, he bit my spoon.

Lost a pike once fishing, he took the hook and leader. I was disappointed and an old man next to me said "re-rig, you'll get him". I though "sure I will". Re-rigged and, you guess it, caught him about 20 minutes later.

Nothing... except that it will learn how to breath air, develop the ability to walk and then hunt you down to exact its revenge!!!

Good luck with that! :yikes:

I'm thinking the two pike I got this season that took my husky jerks at the boat are probably dead already. Both fish had their mouths pretty much hooked shut. I don't give them much of a chance.

As for single hooks... they will rust out eventually. I've caught several fish over the years with hooks in them. Especially salmon... with hooks in their backs... stomachs... tail... even got a hot-n-tot out of a salmons back once.... and many of them look like they've been there a long time. Yet the fish seemed as healthy as any other.

We catch smallmouth with minnows at my place up north and occassionally a catfish will bight. My dad doesn't like touching them cuz of the slime and barb so he'll cut his line. One summer we caught the same fish 4 times. We eventually removed all the hooks from his mouth. The fish seemed fine-well enough to survive with 3 hooks in his mouth for a few months

I've pinned northerns with hooks from a treble. One top, one bottom. They were probably goners. Leaves you with a sick feeling. Single hook shouldn't bother him much. Probably just make him mumble when he's cussing at you.
