ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/det/;_ylt=AqgQVa3u589tFb4OpyEjtsapu7YF) placed struggling left-hander Nate Robertson (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7014/;_ylt=Avwsgxqfyj7TogDaKHx0gEKpu7YF) on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with what was described by manager Jim Leyland as a "tired arm."
Robertson faced six batters in a start on Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/tex/;_ylt=AnuwWKgNWei8AoMI6PO1PeOpu7YF), allowing two walks, two singles, a triple and a grand slam before Leyland removed him from the game. Texas went on to a 7-4 victory as Robertson lost for the fourth time in his last five starts.

Robertson and Leyland had a 45-minute discussion prior to Wednesday night's game against the Rangers. Afterward, Leyland announced that Robertson would be placed on the disabled list and left-hander Andrew Miller (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7847/;_ylt=Ajy2p8W2eQE8XbrwmPNt_ZCpu7YF) will be called up from Double-A Erie to replace Robertson for Sunday's start against the New York Mets (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nym/;_ylt=AsdIh0taucOW5XO6U3rhxEapu7YF).
Leyland refused to answer questions about the move, but he did say another pitcher would be called up from the minors on Thursday to be with the club until Miller's call-up on Sunday.
After the announcement that he was headed for the disabled list, Robertson wouldn't say his arm was hurting, but admitted that his stuff hasn't been the same recently.
"Physically I don't know how you diagnose tired arm, but (the ball) isn't coming out the same," Robertson said. "It's probably the most beneficial decision for the team for them to make this move. I've said time and time again that I want to go out and do my part. Things happen like yesterday, you can't afford them in the position that we're in. You've got to battle through it and that's what I'm trying to do."
Robertson said some time off from throwing might be what he needs to end his slump. "I'll probably have better answers in five or six days," he said. "We'll put something together with the trainers and go from there. I don't have any answers other than that. I want to do my part for this team and I know I'm capable of doing that."

Hopefully it'll do some good, however I do wish this revolving door of pitchers would slow a little.

His location has gone from knee high and hitting all corners, to a waist high, hanging off speed stuff, meatball pitcher...He is lacking velocity and any command of the strike zone...To be continued in 15 days...

One of these times when Andrew Miller is called up, he won't be going back down.

As much talk they did about Miller before signing him I am surprised we have not seen him pitch more than he has.

The Tigers offense is nothing short of outstanding, they have some serious bats. The pitching has been incredible at times, horrible at times, inconsistant to say the least.

Right now I'd say Leyland has the hardest job in all of baseball trying to figure out his pitching.

*Assuming everyone is healthy
He's got a boatload of starters:

Bonderman
Durbin
Maroth
Robertson
Verlander
Rogers
Miller

A pen full of releivers

Byrdak
Grilli
Ledezma
Miner
Zumaya
Rodney
Seay
Jones

With Ledezma, Miner, and Miller being able to make a spot start as well. I know I'd be more comfortable with Miner and Miller over Maroth and Durbin, but that's just me. Verlander and Bonderman have been incredible, Robertson started the year off with some great starts, maybe he just needs some time to rest his arm, seems awful early in the season for a sore arm though.

I'd love to see Leyland leave Miller and Miner up in some capacity....

I'm not sure I'm buying what he's selling: "tired arm?" I think there's more than meets the eye here - I think he may have a more serious injury. But, maybe he saw Rogers coming back, saw what happened to Maroth when he came back last year, saw how unexpectedly well Durbin is doing, and tried to be a trooper.

Hopefully he comes back in '06 form.

And I'm still not convinced that Miller is ready for full-time duty in the bigs - injuries aside, the Tigs have plenty of good, proven starters. Let the kid beat up the other guys in the minors for the rest of this season and see what next spring brings.

Something is definetly wrong with his arm. Velocity is down and he does not have nearly as much snap on his breaking stuff as he did in his early starts.

I don't think accuracy is really the problem. It's the fact that he lacks the confidence because his velocity and snap isn't there so he is not challenging the batter like normal and instead is trying to get them to swing on pitches off the plate in fear that meatballs over the plate will be blasted out like batting practice.

He has a tired arm or don't be suprised if there is something else wrong with his arm.

He's a very good pitcher.

I find it odd. This year it takes alot less time for people to turn on a player then previous seasons. Unbeleivable!:dizzy:

I have to agree that something worse is wrong with Nate. I was suspecting something a few starts ago and this just clinches it. Nate has been too good and too consistent to suddenly lose his effectiveness like this. I predict he'll be gone 30-45 days and come back better than ever...I HOPE!

Not convinced? The guys stuff is electric. There is no experience like big league experience plain and simple. his confidence is as high as it will ever be..no need to continue to beat up the minors. Did you watch his last start for the Tigers? What else do we need to see? Clear out your locker and forget about riding the bus from biloxi to birmingham anymore...i think your here to stay.

Your right the guys has real good stuff. He still doesn't know how to pitch situations. He still has some work on location and preferrably refineing his existing off speed pitches or developing another one. As far as learning those things in the majors I'll use Bonderman as an example. 3 years later how is that change up he's been working on? Not any better. Because he can't afford to work on it here in the bigs. Miller will find the same thing. He will not be able to work on any refinement or new pitches. He may learn somethings about sequencing and situations real quick thu.

His raw talent is so high that it will be fun to watch anyway. But if he stays up it may effect his long term developement. Never know a decision like that could change a player from being a potential H.O.F. to being only a potential couple time All-Star.

You make a valid point wildcat. on the other hand i believe you just never know how good your stuff is until you pitch against the best. That pitch you have been working on in the minors that is getting people out...might not be effective against big league hitters. And it works the other way also. Some guys just arent capable of reaching down and bringing their best stuff when pitching in the minors..and when they get there chance they make the best of it..they know they have to be sharp. I think the only way to see if Miller is ready is get him a few regular starts in the rotation. Let him make a start and then sit in the bullpen and think about his next start for 5-6 days. Sunday will be a real test for the youngin..the Mets are on a losing streak so they are hungry..and they are a potent offense. Mental toughness is the only question in my mind whether or not Miller will succeed and stay up...or be moved back down. Can he let up a few early and bear down? can he pitch through a carlos guillen error that cost a few runs? Hopefully Bonderman sheds a little of that bulldog mentallity on the kid. Either way im looking forward to watching him pitch.

Can't see him on TV...but Nate looks like he needs to go back on the DL. He is getting creamed every inning through 3. 5 hits and 2 walks....luckily for us he is loading up on strikeouts.

That could be a product of the Indians - second in the AL in offense to... oh yeah, El Tigres! (Same thing happened to Rogers)
