I was wondering what planers have worked the best for you guys, and if the top of the line boards are necessary for success.
Thanks

Off Shore Tackle in-line boards are the ones for me. I have a tourney style boat so I run in-lines. They make a few different kinds, I and most walleye fishermen use Or-12's(yellow). They also sell Or-31 which are configured a bit differently and are used for rough water and bigger fish (salmon, striper, etc.)
But Off Shore makes the best. Their web site is:

I think the Church boards are the best, here is there website, http://www.churchtackle.com/
The nice thing about these is that they run well right out of the box. No extra cost to get a board that stays on your line.
Maybe we can see on the 16th which boards catch more fish.;)

I opt for Church's boards also. Perfect for Walleyes on the Bay. That is when I don't put out the big boards, or drift fish, or run small discs, or...............   :fish2:

Off Shore for me. Michigan based company. From Port Austin. I wonder if they mold and assemble in Michigan?? The Church boards are nice also. I have a few Yellow Birds that are ok for ultra lite applications.

I've never used boards but I think I understand how they work and am thinking about getting some for walleye fishing. Do you guys use flags on the boards? Would it make it easier for a beginner? Bottom bouncers work OK off the boards do I need inline weights? Maybe I'll get one and try to get it down b4 buying 2. Thanks for the advice.

I agree, right out of the package, Church boards are the best. If you want to upgrade to a tattle flag board, the Offshore system is much better.
Offshore guys can be quite fanatical about their boards. Check out this thread about the "Offshore suppout group" I found on another website http://walleye.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=9291&posts=20&start=1

If you are "into" flags, you should check out the new Church flag system, they are pretty slick.

Tried them a couple years ago. Unless they changed the set-up since then, I don't like them. Kind of a pain to install correctly and they make the board top heavy.

They are brand new this year, at least that is what I was told. They can be set up for the flag to go up or down, is that the way the ones you tried were?

I use the Offshore boards with the flags, but because I use 14 # test Fireline, the Offshore line grippers, even upgraded to the red extra heavy duty units, would sometimes release the line in heavy wave conditions. Due to this, I bought Church’s line grippers and converted my Offshoar boards to use Church’s grippers. For some reason, the Church’s grippers will not release until you squeeze them, as it should be. Since this "upgrade" I have been very happy with my hybread boards.

You have to keep the pads soft when using fireline. I put a dab of nail polish remover on them about once a week and it keeps them from hardening. Just rub it in with your finger and it will keep the pad from forming that hard shell like on an old pencil eraser. I have OR-18 snapper releases on my boards and they work great with any fishing line. They do sell replacement pads as well.
