The Michigan Duck Stamp began in 1976 by the MDNR as a monetary source for wetland acquisition. A group of waterfowl hunters have saved this long standing duck stamp contest. The duck stamp, once required of all waterfowl hunters, had been replaced by a license that can be issued from terminals. Therefore, it's harder to get the stamp, and many hunters don't even try.
The DNR decided to end the stamp contest, but the Michigan Duck Hunters Association decided to run the contest. It will arrange the printing of stamps and prints, and pay the DNR a royalty for wetlands acquisition. The rest of the money is used by the MDHA for various waterfowl projects in the state of Michigan!

I believe the state of Michigan really screwed up big time when they discontinued the sale of and printing of the stamp ! ! I know it's still being printed by the MDH but the state should have maintained this excellent source of income for wetlands. Have you ever counted the number of refuges in our state compared to other states. I think I can count all of them on both my hands when most other states have dozens. When the percentage of birds that are produced in our state that our also harvested here "resident ducks" is as high as it is the state should be producing as much income as it possibly can to produce as many refuges as possible. I'd even be willing to pay a couple of extra bucks for my state license/stamp if they'd go back to the old way and I'm sure I'm not the only other hunter in that state that would be more than willing to sacrifice a couple of bucks each year for the benefit of the waterfowl. Just my 2cents worth !!!!
