View Full Version : Minnow Rap Cleans Up in Canada

Turned out to be the hot lure in Ontario this year, literally caught SCORES of fish on the 2 minnow raps I took with me. It served up a mixed bag too, northerns, splake, and my biggest walleyes and lakers were caught on it. I was the only one who brought them, and was handsomely rewarded by the fish gods for doing so (and keeping my mouth shut before we left:lol: )

It works a very good depth range for large, active predators. It swims well at slow speeds. I modified one to be neutrally bouyant, and the fish just KILLED it while it sat at rest 2feet above the bottom at the base of breaks - that was the primary pattern we fished.

This year was the best fishing in 3 years, fish were highly aggressive (just the way I like it), gotta love the ice coming off early. Water levels, however, were down 4 feet from last year.

Several pics of the trip in my gallery if anyone cares to see the damage the minnow raps did.

DON'T GO FISHING IN CANADA WITHOUT 'EM!!!

Good job on scoring the fish. I looked through some of your photos, looked like a very successful trip

I assume since you were suspending the lure, you were casting. Or trolling or both??

Do you know about how deep they would dive?

Thanks . . .

Both. Lure dives 6-8 when casting and 10-11 when trolling, depending on speed and line length. That just happened to be "the zone" on the lakes I fish this year due to the low water. The new weeds were growing out to the edge of the primary break to deeper water. It was perfect.

If you don't want those mushy , flavorless eyeballz - I know a few guys that would reluctantly eat 'em for ya!

This was a hot lure:

I had brought another one in firetiger, and it did well two but only lasted a couple hours until I lost it to rocks (with 20# fireline/30# CrossLok snap leader, no less).

SFW - the "pickerel" (as the canadians call 'em) was :corkysm55 DELICIOUS:corkysm55 ! Ate one of the bigger ones last night baked in parchment with garlic-herb butter, asparagus and roasted sweet peppers. And that minnow rap is one hell of a lure.

I even took the time to bleed the fish out before filleting(I highly reccomend this after trying it), and the fillets turned out perfectly white - then the fish was frozen 10 minutes later. YUM. The Splake and Lakers are what I'm looking forward too, though. I bled them out, dressed 'em, and froze them whole. Gonna stuff those and bake 'em. Maybe filet one or two.

We had 3 Splake filet shorelunches cooked on the floor of my boat with a boy scout mess kit, mr heater, olive oil & lawrys(I should have took pictures:( ). I fileted those bad boys up on the carpeted floor of my boat:coolgleam . Shoulda had a sign on my boat that said "FRESH FISH SERVED HERE".

Splake fishing is the hottest thing going.

Thanks Sea N.! I'm head up to Canada late july for a week and will be sure to grab a couple. Don't need to grab the purple...already have a couple of those.:) The bleeding olive does look quite tasty along with your recipe. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:corkysm55
