I'm heading over to fish the opener with Due51. I know he has what we need (thanks to many of you) for the day... but if I were to go to Gander or some other store here in West Michigan or over there on the way in... what bait would you guys recomend as being a "I won't fish the opener without it" bait? I own 0 musky baits at this time...

Mike

PS, John... call me (check your PM's).

If your're shopping at GM, a Rapala Super Shad Rap. Nice price and a productive lure good for trolling or casting.

I'll be running Loke's and Wiley's, but doubt you can get them there.

Pattern?? Size?

Shad, perch, gold. They only come in one size. SSR14

I'll have also be dragging other lures, but GM should have SSRs.

Problem with the Super Shad Rap is that they tune out very easily, and don't stay down well at high speeds. Very good for 10' or less when you can get them to stay down.

Bucher Depth Raiders much better for reliability when trolled in terms of depth and speed control. One of my St. Clair favorites.

I know you can't get them out there, but I've had good luck with Believers. I've only fished specifically for muskies 4 times, but 3 out of the four times I did I caught one on a believer. You can find em in a lot of bait stores around the lake. I know they are an old lure, but I like em. We've caught a few pike on them too. Good luck!

:yeahthat: BTW, I lent your partner both those baits and I put them along with olive frog, blue frog and gold scale perch in a seperate box and told him those are what I would start with. Save your money, you guys will have plenty of baits to try. :) Make sure to tune them before you send them back! BTW, I wouldn't hesitate to run some fur (bucktail) at some point during the day. He has a couple of those too.

Mike, contact Ninja (Ken at KD Outdoors). I don't know if he has any musky baits but it's worth a PM.

Otherwise, I can bring you in a different way that passes right by Bass Pro Shops (don't tell Ken I said that:lol:).

I would also go w the Loke. Later in the year try a Nils (I think thats the name made in Sweden). The Nils are bigger. Good for the hogs out there. Perch pattern sometimes yellow belly other times white belly. I believe Lakeside tackle sells both.

you are close. Nils are made in Finland.

You can get both at LSC Muskie Shop or at Lakeside. This time of year, the 6" Loke will do you better. Save your NILS for the fall.

I had a friend go out with Bob and tell tell me about the stories.

He said if someone gave me a dollar for everytime he was quiet and I gave them a nickle for everytime he was talking I would have owed him hundred at the end of the day!

He also said he would not have traded that day for anything. They laughed and learned the whole day.

Known Bob for some 30 yrs now. Fished with him in many MOMC Tourneys way back then. Limited out one night with him in 15 minutes on eye's casting that redeye. He's says ...Ya hear that....those eye's are scarfing on the mayflies......... stops the boat.....starts casting ....... we were done in no time. Just unbelievable. Yup............. learned a lot from him.;)

Got a few stories about him myself.

Small straight wileys and other small straight baits the super shad rap as mentioned is good or perch would be the best color with a white belly or pike scale 2nd and 3rd silver coach dog or jailbird for a big one.Fish hard
