I'm considering new arrows and would like to hear your views on the Easton Axis Fullmetal Jacket.
I think the smaller diamiter and slightly heavier weight will make it a better hunting arrow........What do you guys think?

I think your exactly right:D
I hunt the Beman Black Max.
425 grains and thin diameter. I hate shooting them into anything I have to pull them back out of cause they're in there DEEP!
Everyone talks about Kinetic energy and while that's a part of it they often overlook the more pertinent factor of momentum and friction when considering penetration.

Ever see the video of the guy shooting a rifle with 1000s of pounds of KE into a bucket of sand? Bullet only makes ita couple inches in. He than shoots a heavy aluminum arrow through and blows right through it.

I'm shooting them and love them. Haven't put them through any game yet, but they shoot like an Axis and side by side in the the target, they are a few inches deeper, despite being close in finished weight. (I axed a couple uneeded inches off the FMJ's vs. my Axis) Not really a big fan of the aluminum "sound" on my rest when drawing though. It's not as bad as all aluminum shafts, but is not as quiet as an Axis either.

I can attest that they penetrate quite deeply. Nice arrows. Make sure that you have some moleskin or something on your rest similar to other aluminum arrows to avoid the noise. Nice arrows. I shot the 340 grains last year, right now I'm trying the 400 grains with 100 grain montecs.

I've never shot them but I heard a few guys talking about them "mushrooming" at the insert end after extreme amounts of shooting. Hard to believe since I've never even seen that on all aluminum arrows (besides shooting something that they werent supposed to hit). Has anyone else heard of this?

I did it to one at a 3D messing around. I shot a BIG heavy old iron bell.

It made a lot of peices but the end was mushroomed out.

Still far and away the toughest shafts Ive used.

What are you guys paying for a dozen shafts around your area?

Fletched over here in Escanaba I believe they were 10 a piece for the 400 grains. It was at the Hoyt/Marbles/Matthews guy by the mill.

KJ what weight tips are you using and at what poundage? Do you use the Bemans for target and hunting?

Hunting for sure. though I did use them for 3D last week and they SUCK to pull from foam (ask Byron or Grouse or Sweits Rick:D )

My target setup was in pieces so....

They aint a 3D arrow. Heavy, thin, and very penetrative (Hey! I made a new word!)
100 grain head.
68lbs
340's weigh in around 425-429 finished.

Over spined as hell for the length and cam config but I wanted the weight.
