I just got back from a 10 day trip to Ludington State Park. The Salmon are thick in the Sable River. Also were being being caught in the surf of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the river. I hooked 5, landed 1 . Not a good average, but a lot of fun.

I hear that the Sable is one of those rivers that snagging is still legal, is this true? If so then why does the dnr allow this? To me that is BS and shouldn't be allowed. Down here in the SW, we take care snaggers real quick. They keep a fish we cut their stringer, and call the dnr poacher hotline. I stayed there at Beachwood for a while in the middle of August to fish the early run of salmon on the PM and the campground is beautiful for the number of people that stay there. Glad you did good on that river.

practice catch and release, or selective harvest,

Snagging definitely NOT legal on the Sable. Lot of notices posted to make sure everyone is aware of it. In addition, it was being agressively enforced. I saw several people written up. The problem is that anyone fishing a spoon with a treble hook is a potential snagger. Everyone I saw that attempted to leave with a snagged fish was written up. Most were releasing them.

Here in Ohio we have had a similar problem with snagging walleyes in the Maumee and Sandusky rivers in the spring. They have limited the hours essentially the same as the Sable. They have also outlawed all treble hooks during the spawning run, which I think was a good idea.

I wasn't prepared for the salmon being in the river so I started out with a walleye jig that I had. A couple of guys from the campground got me started with a puff ball spawn imitation fly that they were doing OK with. Now I know a little more about the term chuck and duck.
