Will be renting a cabin with the family up near Harrisville. Was thinking of packing the rods and trying to get some fishing in if I get a chance. I have not fished this area before. Are there any places nearby where I could fish from shore? I don't really care which species (trout, steelhead, bass, pike, walleye, etc.) Any suggestions for tackle, bait, etc?
Just looking basically for some direction in a nearby place to wet a line and hopefully catch a few fish.
All help is greatly appreciated and PM's are always welcome.
Thanks.
John

you can fish right on the breakwall for walleye at night or early morning. you have the alcona pond in town area, the ausable in oscoda 20 minutes south and you have hubbard lake about 30-45 minutes due ENE 72 west to hubbard lakeshore drive. at smokeys bar you have a public launch at the north end you have a public launch and i believe at the south end old marina you have a launch still in use at the river which is home to some rainbow fishing and pike. and the list goes on and on for fishing. you just have to talk to the bait shops to see whats what and were it is.as far as tackle goes bring what ever you have because the one you don't is the one they WANT!
try HAGLUNDSall outdoors 989-724-9320 on m-72 harrisville, LINCOLN outdoor center in lincoln 989-736-6150

Alcona Pond is in glennie, straight across M-72 to M-65 then south about 5 miles. Great fishing there, but hard to fish from shore unless you have a campsite. Don't forget to try the mouth of Ausable in evening and at night for walleye to ;)
I'd go to Hubbard for smallies, here they're big and fairly easy to catch since they aren't targeted heavy on the lake due to other species.

Ralph my thoughts also the lower Au Sable has a pretty good run of catfish in early summer , don't forget Foote and Cooke ponds for panfish , some good access from shore on COOKE . There is pretty good stream trout fishing on the xxx , the xxx and the xxx Rivers , all 3 run through mostly private land and the locals pretty hush hush about giving up information on them . Depending when your going to be there the rocks in Harrisville can be a real sleeper .

You can catch catfish all through the Au Sable system. Nighttime is by far the best time, but they can be caught throughout the day. Fish slow, deep holes with crawlers, cut bait, or my favorite, salmon skein. I caught a big ole' channel on the first bend upstream of the Meat hole one day on a crayfish, that cat went probably 8lbs or more. If you fish the mouth, use natural baits. The cheese, stinkbaits, chicken liver and such do not work well at all on the Au Sable.

We would be shore fishing and he uses shrimp that was set out in the sun for a couple of hours and then froze.
