Be thankful you don't live in Midland and have this guy as your Sports section editor. I understand it sucks that the Wings are out, but c'mon, your the editor of sports and this is what you come up with for the Stanley Cup Finals?

Maybe everyone does feel this way and I am a minority, but I will still be watching the finals. I am kind of excited to see the Sens. I guess I like hockey, not just when my team is playing/winning.

And with regards to Vs, I agree they are less than perfect as far as commentary, etc, but at least they picked the NHL up. Didn't ESPN not even offer to pick them up?

A snoozer of a Stanley Cup By Chris Stevens (stevens@mdn.net)

Is everybody excited?

It's the Anaheim Ducks and the Ottawa Senators in the Stanley Cup finals!!!

Yawn.

No, really. The Ducks vs. the Senators, can't wait, how about you?

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

It's the greatest show on ice. The Cup, man, the Cup. We're talking about the Cup.

Are you going to watch?

Does it conflict with bingo? If it does, then you know the answer.

The NHL is in trouble, folks. And, no, it's not just because a number of their playoff games were aired on something called VERSUS, a channel I don't even get on my TV. Is the NHL's aim to keep the playoffs top secret? Poker tournaments and dog competitions get better play than that.

If you heard any loud crying last night, it wasn't necessarily from Detroit Red Wings' fans. It was from the higher-ups in the NHL, who must be in state of depression over what they're offering hockey fans in their premier showcase -- the Ducks vs. the Senators.

It's a who-cares series in what has become a who-cares sport.

You can hear the spin right now from the NHL. With the Ducks playing the Senators, it's a chance for hockey fans in regions out West to get to know the sport.

Yes, and 16 hockey fans outside of Anaheim will be right there with them, watching every second of the action.

Losing Detroit was huge. It's an Original Six team that has a large and loyal following, not only in the Midwest, but throughout the nation and in parts of Canada.

The Ducks? Well .... they've got Snoop Dogg as a fan, I hear.

With the NHL's TV ratings already in the toilet, and their scheduling throughout the regular season already extremely puzzling, they should figure out a way to get Boston, Detroit, New York, Toronto, Montreal or Chicago in the Cup finals.

Give them a free pass. Let the other teams fight for the final playoff spot.

They need to drum up some interest in this sport.

Here's another thought. Don't play the Cup finals in June. Start the season earlier, like in September, shorten the number of games, and have the Cup finals take place in late February or March, when hockey is on the radar of most sports fans.

With the Cup to taking place in June, especially with this dog series, it won't out-draw reruns of Seinfeld.

Fans in Canada, knock yourselves out. You'll be right there, watching every second of the Senators' games. Hockey is in your blood.

For 99.8 percent of Americans, the season ended last night when the Red Wings were eliminated.

Maybe the Red Wings should play the Buffalo Sabres in an alternate Cup series. That actually has some intrigue.

But the Ducks vs. the Senators?
Yuck.

Why would you not watch? I can see not planning your day/night around it like I do Wings games, but you're done with hockey till next year, just like that?

Hockey must be in worse shape than I understand if all the "fans" are like this guy (Mr. Big Time Sportswriter).

Hockey is hockey, I enjoy watching whether it be mini-mites, highschool, college, OHL, or NHL, local teams or not.

I agree.

The key word in your post is "fans"..... there are people that "watch" the Wings and then there are "hockey fans".

I'm not a fan of either of the teams in the finals but I am still going to watch. Sounds like Mr. Stevens has sour grapes.

I just have a bad taste in my mouth I guess, If there happened to be a game on I may stop for a few minutes and watch. Who knows. I think for hockey to get better then there needs to be more media coverage so that people can actually watch. Officiating needs to be revamped. Again, just a bad taste!!

I'll be watching. Like was said earlier, I won't plan my day around it, but it will be on. It's still the Stanley Cup. Besides, it's time to see what it takes, and who we need to snag for next years run.:D

Here's to a great, fun year!:D Looking forward to next season already!!

The Z's in the Conf Finals did a decent job. The calls seemed to even themselves out.

As much a Red Wings fan as I am, and love watching them play, I treat the reg season and playoffs the same as football...I watch my team and the Super Bowl/closeout game in the cup finals. Otherwise, I just don't have the time to devote to other teams that I have no real interest in...

At the end of the day, I am proud of our team and the season they had. Given the injuries, travel, lack of home ice fan support, they performed very well. I am actually excited for the next season after seeing some of the youth get a chance to play on the big ice and perform well. Good things for the future.

I'll be watching. First and foremost, I am a loyal, honest and die hard fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Secondly, I am also a hockey fan. I'm pissed that my team's not in the Finals this year, but I love the game.

Plus, I'm watching to root for Ottawa. I'm sorry, but I can't stand friggin Anaheim. And I hate Pronger. I really don't want to see his name on the Cup, I just don't. Plus, another reason why I'm excited to root for the Sens this year, I really want to see the Canadians (the citizens, not the franchise obviously) get a Cup. I really do. Canada deserves a championship, and some fun and some excellant ice cold brews to celebrate. I really respect Canadians as a whole, and I am very fond of the country itself. Honestly, when was the last time Canada had Stanley's chalice? It was Montreal in 93, right? I'm thinking, NYR, NJD, avs, DETROIT, Dallas, TBL, Carolina......am I missing anyone? It's gotta be 93 Habs. Anyway, I know it's been far to long for a nation that has hockey in its blood so.....C'mon Senators! Whoop them bleeping Ducks!

Fisheater, get out of my head man. I want the Sens to win so badly I can almost taste it. The honest to goodness true reason... the thought of Pronger hoisting the cup almost makes me freaking sick to my stomach. Man I hate him.

And as far as that article. I see a whole lot of truth in it. I mean they are neither real big market teams. I think that is the point he is trying to make. Whether you feel the same way as him or not, I find it hard to disagree with his logic. I myself will watch it when I can. Hockey, any hockey is always a good thing to watch.

Anybody remember that basball commercial last fall with the guy hiding up in a tree during the playoffs?

Announcer: What's he doing up there?
Guy's wife: He's a Cubbies fan.
Announcher: Ooh, ouch.
Wife: He's been up there since the playoffs started.
Announcer: I know you're a Cubs fan, but you're an even bigger fan of BASEBALL! Come on down.

That is how I feel about this series. If you don't want to see this fast, high-scoring Ottawa team take it to the Quacks then you're crazy. Remember before the lock-out when the East was all about trapping and the West all about scoring and good goalies? Well the east now has the powerhouses that put the puck in the net. Spezza and Heatley are going to be tearing up the league for the next 10 years, so you might as well get used to them. Alfredsson has 10 goals already, and all three make the best line in the league by far. Fisher, Neil and co. are going to be laying some big hits as well. I hate most of the teams in the league, but some of these Eastern teams are going to be fun to watch for the next few years, and it starts with Ottawa this year.

Go Sens!

For hockey to acheive anY kind of television rights parity with the other major sports if needs RATINGS and a Ottawa Aneheim series won't get it done. Advertisers will pay for next years playoffs/stanley cup telecasts what THIS years series produce. Same reason a New York or Chicago team in the finals of any sport is a bonanza for the network carrying the telecasts. Same with golf if tiger is in the hunt the final day ratings spike like it or not. This Stanley cup series has the west coast time diffference going against it with most of the popular hockey towns which are maingly eastern time zones. I will watch but hockey needs to "PREACH TO MORE THAN THE CHOIR" AND GUYS WE ARE THE CHOIR
