For the last 2 years I have had problems keeping the coons out of my boat. Last night I picked my boat up from storage, when I got home I noticed the coons were back in it, they left a dozen piles of crap for me to clean up. After cleaning the boat I decided there was time to get it started and ready to go for hopefully this weekend. Boat would not start due to a missing coil wire. While searching for the wire I found a missing screwdriver way under the engine, so I went to grab it, with my luck I grabbed the back end of a mother coon. She has made my boat home, at least up until now. Anyway to make a long story short, I spent the night fighting with 3 coons, 2 did not survive the attack, but 1 did. I hope it had left the boat, but at this point I am not sure.
I need help keeping these things out. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Ammonia or moth balls should be a temporary solution. A live trap and a 22 would be more perminent.

Lots and lots of moth balls, I had a coworker bring his boat over to my house for some minor engine work to be done by me. Well during the week before this I had a problem with a coon hanging around my yard. As soon as the boat came into my yard with about a ton of moth balls in it that coon was no longer seen. I mean the moth balls were so bad that from 15 ft from the boat you could smell them. I swear the guy put like a box in every storage compartment. There was no mice damage or coon damage at all from it being stored.
All it needed was the carbs cleaned and the impeller replaced and it was ready for the water.

Put out some Flybait. It's a blue granular stuff that you mix with coke. You can usually find it at the local hardware store. They eat it and make it about 5 feet before they croak.

Watch out about the poison thing. Dog owners will come after ya.

Same thing happened to me with my 1997 16 Donzi... interior survived just fine thank god... floatation foam and lifejackets on the otherhand did not... and that big male coon had taken residence in the bilge... where i could not get to him.
Ever have a really angry coon by the tail? bit of an adrenaline rush with that one... It was a long battle but in the end mr coon went for a 30 yard flight through mid air.. then the chase ensued into the barn with the 22... but in the end... I won that fight and he's pushin daisies
Flood the bilge and when the water gets to them or above their noses they'll come out into the open... then it is game on... hope you are prepared and don't get yourself bitten or scratched... mid forarm length heavy leather welding gloves are pretty nice in this situation... a big fish net if you can get them into it really tangles them up... for a good clean shot or a thumpin with a bat... but guns n bilges don't mesh...
I'll hold my tongue on the poisoning bit..... (zips lips)...

They are gone, with no damage to the boat. I did have moth balls in the boat 3 boxes of them, along with Bleach in a bucket. I believe these things, (at least the mother anyway) have been there for the last year. They are all dead, so there is 3 less coons in Michigan this week!!!! are boats will be safer.

The stuff is called Golden Malrin cost about 6-7 bucks a can. Mix it with coke or pepsi in a disposable type dish and put in the boat or barn UP OFF THE FLOOR to keep the dogs and such away. I've heard it called Coon die soon cause they only make it about 5-6 steps from the bowl.
Taken 10 coons and 8 possum out of my barn the last couple years, no cats or dogs to date. Be smart in placement of the stuff and the coons will come to it.
