View Full Version : Cohos
It appears as thought the cohos are moving into the lower Platte River, although you cannot fish the lower river below the weir; I think the surf fishing will be good now, especially with the cold weather. By the way, how do you put one of smiley faces or whatever inside your post?

Thanks for the info on the COHO. ;)
For the smilies, just click on the smilies legend to the left side of the editing window when your making a post. Then just add the appropriate code where you want it to appear.

Thanks for the help. BTW the salmon are getting close to running up river in all streams now. :D
Hey guys, this may sound stupid to you all but I'm not sure if I've ever seen a coho. How can you tell them apart from say a chinook jack. I have books that show pictures of all the different salmon but to be honest, the fish I see in real life look alot different than those in my books. The reason I'm asking is, I was fishing the St joe last year and this guy caught what I thought was a jack. He said it was a coho. I sure couldn't tell the differance. Are there any obvious things to look for? My book says that coho look more like steelhead, but the fish this guy caught didn't look any thing like a steelhead. It had a black mouth and spots along the upper body. It was kind of a golden color like chinooks get when they spawn.

The quickest way for me to tell is by looking into the mouth. If the mouth is mostly white, then it is a coho. Kings have a mostly black inner mouth. To tell the difference between a steelie and a coho, look at the top of the head, if it has a wrinkled appearance, it is a steelhead. ;)
