View Full Version : Couldn't stand it!

Went back to the Big M, wed. I couldn't think about anything else when the temps droped down in the 40s, I just new the fish would be happy. I was right! Didn't find any more there than during the weekend, but the ones I found were quite aggressive.
Got up at 3:00 am, and made the haul all the way to the river, to arrive slightly before 8:00. Called my boss from my cell phone from the boat luanch. Never mind what I told him! It was cold, the river had thick fog rising from it. First temp readings showed a big drop from the previous weekends low seventies, to the now, mid sixties. I passed an imature bald eagle that was sitting in a tree eating something. Looked like fish remains. I already suspected the fishing would be good, but seeing the eagle so close and not having it spook and fly away just said it all! Oh yah! Went straight to my favorite spot and had the whole place to myself. Took all of three casts to hook into what turned out to be the biggest one of the day. A 22 pound female! And yes I know this because..... shock of all shocks, ...I landed her!!!!!! I've got to tell you guys, I played that fish like no other. I did NOT want to loose another one. Consequently by the time I got her to the boat, she was about done in. When I pulled her into the boat I could hear "pomp and circumstance" playing somewhere in the background! God, it sure felt good to break that jinx thats been hanging over me. Funny thing is, I looked up only seconds later and saw the bald eagle flying over. Man is that too much or what?! Hey, I don't blame anyone for thinking I made this all up, but I swear its true! O.K. so maybe "pomp and circumstance" didn't really play but the rest is true!
Fished the rest of the day, landed quite a few, and surprisingly even though I really put the presure on some of them, I landed almost every one. I'm not going to tell you how many, thats against my principles, but I let all of them go except that first female and one nice male. All of them hit salmon eggs.
Was it all worth it? It probably cost me about $150.00 for missing the days work. It definatly cost me sixtie bucks in fuel. And it dearly cost me in the sleeping category! My wife isn't real happy with me either, of course I'm kinda getting used to that. But with all things considered, I think that if you ask me about it years from now when I'm old and gray, that it will still be as fresh in my memory as the day it happend! As for work, I've already forgotten what I did last week :)

Erik, you're a wild man. I love stories like this, more for the dedication than the actual results of fishing, albeit you had a great result.

I've been off from work all week and have been fishing every day for 4-6 hours (near home). My wife has been great about it, but I have fit in some "honey-do's" to keep on her good side.

Great job on the fishing and enjoyment of Michigan's natural resources.

Man Erik, I love the way you tell a story, but you sing a couple of bars of "Pomp and Circumstance" for us, I can't remember the song. HEHEHEHE

Someday I will land my first. First I need to hook up with one though. Don't know if I have the dedication that it takes though to get up at 3am for the drive :)

Steve, Steve, not enough dedication? I am disappointed in you man. You haven't lived until you've been on Platte bay when the sun comes up. If there is anything prettier anywhere, I can't see where. But it is tough to get up that early, but worth it.

We really need to get Steve out fishing up here! between all of us someone must have the time to help this poor guy out. Once he hooks one it won't be a matter of not having the dedication any longer, but having the time. (just giving you a hard time Steve.)

Erik, You get a 10 for dedication and A 10 for landing a fresh 22 pound hen out of a boat by yourself!
Steve you better get out now if you want to get that first river salmon. Once we hit October 1 I doubt you'll have the interest!

You've got the Oct 1st thing right WEEZER. Its already the only thing I can think about. But I still may hit the rivers and streams up there in the afternoon between sitting out in the woods.

Guys, thats what fall is all about! Not being able to make up your mind, "should I fish, or should I hunt"? Thats the burning question I always ask myself come oct 1st. It continues right through december. It may seem simple to some, but sometimes I cant make up my mind right up till I go to bed the night before! Of course, I can think of many things that are worse to be indecisive about.
Michigan sure is cool aint it!

For me it isn't too hard, during the rifle season, there is something to be said for having our rivers around here pretty much to my self. I still where something orange to try and protect myself, but like last year one day during rifle season; I had the whole Betsie River to myself, literally, during the opening week of deer season. Gotta love that.
