Impeller or what esle???

I have a 8 horse mercury (1991), this motor is like new.
I got this from my uncle who never used it.
The water will only come out of the tell tale
when it is in gear, nothing when it is just idling.
I changed the impeller and blew air into the tell tale.
still the same result.
Any help would be great.

My first thought is you have some sort of a shifter problem with the drive shaft from the power head? That can be tricky to reassemble and get that shift linkage correct.

I also though that maybe it was the metal plate that sits just below the impellor. Did you just change the impellor or did you buy the kit that gives you the plate also. If the plate that the impellor sits on is worn out(scratched with groves in it) it may not create that suction that it needs to pump large volumes of water unless its reving higher like when its in forward or reverse? I learned my lesson on that one a long time ago. Spend the extra 15-20 bucks and get the kit when doing an impellor change.

There also may be a blockage of some sort in the tube that pumps the water to the pee'er. You would be surprised at the places Wasp's wil build those mud nests, also might just be dirt, etc, etc

I just changed the impeller. But I will take it apart again
to check out that part.
