View Full Version : Where do old boats go to die?

I just got the bad news on my old 18 ft Starcraft with the chevy engine, oil smell in the gas. Tech told me to sell it as a fixer upper but I think I am just gonna put her down. Love that boat, so where do I take it? Is there a boat scrapyard or cemetery or something?

You could donate it and get a tax write off. Here is one chairity for example you can donate to.

Your best bet is to call local marinas and see if they would scrap it out for you. They might if their are some parts they could get. If not you need to pull the motor out and scrap it for money and take the boat to the junk yard, but that will cost you. Also you could post an add for a free boat that needs major motor repair. A small block is cheep for a skilled person, but if its an outboard then forget it. Good Luck

I just rebuilt my old 73 Sea Ray cuddy SRV2200. I love that boat and It is worth it to me to keep it around. Some boats are worth it and some aren't

Rebuilding the engine won't cost a mint and worth it if the hull is structurally sound.

Exactly... if the boat is in decent shape, and you like it... rebuilding or replacing a chevy small block, 4.3, 3 liter, etc... is actually not that expensive. A lot less than buying another boat to replce the one you have.

If you like this boat, don't give up on it yet!!

Hey now.... none of my boats are on their death bed. Just because they are nearly as old as you doesn't mean they are broken down.... unlike....

I do not know the hull material but if it is aluminum, don't forget that scrap aluminum with paint on it is at least 60-70 cents a pound. The motor can also go as scrap and that would be approx $130 per salvage ton. (2300# I think it is) Not a lot of money but then sell the trailer for another $200 and you could get almost $400 for it. If it is fiberglass, ... read others posts!!! Rick
