View Full Version : hit and run skamianias!
Took my son to the big man yesterday. Don't know how we managed to miss the rain like we did, just got lucky I geuss. Any ways, while I was fixing one of our rods my son starts yelling he has a fish on. Well hold on to him I said, not really paying that much attention. (he has a habit of yelling that alot and I figured it was just another small trout) So then I hear his drag start ripping out, and I looked up and he's got this huge skamiania on the end of his line. He's hanging on for dear life while this fish is jumping and going nuts. The fish finally gets real mad and takes off for lake michigan. Half way through his run he broke the light six lb test leader. We watched him jump all the way down and around the next bend. Both of us are laughing our butts off at how crazy that fish went. We agreed that he deserved to get loose!
The river was up nicely from our last trip up there. Water temp was 68 at one place we checked and a firm 70 at another. Water was only slightly stained when we left but judging from the amount of rain we got as we were leaving I would think its quite stained today. We used salmon eggs and marabou jigs, and managed to pull some other fish out, all though the big one got away.

WOW Nice fish! It's funny how long and skinny those fish are this time of year. 15 pounds of muscle or more than that? BTW that spot looks very familiar! Is there a ton of timber in the water about 30 yards down river? :)
The pic was taken at the boat launch, dumb dad left the camera laying on the front seat of the truck when we left and we had to wait till we got back to get a picture. The fish looks pretty big in my sons hands, actually it was only eight pounds and twenty nine inches long. We were talking on TSS about indentifying skamainias, probably the only distinguishing facter is that they seem long and slender. You would think they would have some sort of special fin clip, but I've caught them with all differant types of clips. This one had an adipose clip, which should mean he has a wire tag in his snout. I have the head in the freezer and plan on dropping it off at the DNR next chance I get.
BTW, my son wants me to be sure and tell everyone that he is the one that landed this fish! Well, dad helped just a little.

Nice fish Phish, it looks like the kid can outfish you already hehehe. This is what I like to see, pictures of nice fish. Thanks
Well, its not hard to outfish the old man, but when he outfishes his mother then he will have acomplished something! Hah!
So when we gonna see some pics from you? I want to see that big one your wife got!
Gee thanks Phish for reminding me that I lost that fish for my wife, cripes I've been trying to get over that ever since. I will post a picture of a nice brown I got in the Big Man in December. Just as soon as I figure out how to do it, since I am computor illiterate.

My fishing buddy(Ladykiller) took a 11.3 pound adipose clipped steelie last March. He turned in the head and just got the results back. It was a Little man strain planted in 1996 at Tippy.
Erik, When you get the results back make sure you post them! I'm wondering if the Skamania strain grows faster than the Little man strain.
