Im looking to buy a new bag type archery target and need some advice. Im kind of new to archery and my shots are not as tight as I would like them to be . As a result I am looking for a larger bag type target that I wont miss as easily and have to chase my arrow into the field , neighbours dog ,etc. I would be using it just for practice with field points. What should I buy and where ??? Thanks in advance Al

If you live by a farmer or someone that has straw for sale I would pick up about 8-10 bales of straw. At about 2-3 dollars a bale that would be 24-30 dollars. Then you can set that up behind a 3-d target. Works great, that is what I have for a set up.

To answer your pm, yes you can go 2 bales deep, also I would go 1 bale high and wider then your intial target. I use a Mckenzie 3-d target I got for a B-day gift. My bale stack is 1 higher and wider then the 3-d target. If for some reason I miss the target the bales have always stopped my arrow. I am shooting a Browning Vapor 3-8 fps. Plus with the straw you can use it for broad head testing and tuning as well.

What I would recommend, if you're using field tips only, is to buy the biggest bag target you can find. The Bass Pro brand and Morrell are both fine, and will stop arrows into the 300 fps+ range. Practice from 20 yards and in, until you're confident in your ability to hit the target consistently, the step it back in 5 yard increments.

Not that using straw can't provide you a good backstop, but it's bulky, messy, and will rot and eventually have to be disposed of at some time. I would just go with a large bag type, and of course, always be aware of what's behind your intended target.

Morrell Outdoor Range they run about $85-90 but will last for 3-4years. Its one of the largest targets for field points. If you want to go the cheap route I've seen some targets where you layer cardboard or blackboard insulation and use some boards and a couple pieces of threaded rod to squeeze it down.Kinda the same idea like the layered foam targets available.

IMO If it were me and was going to spend that kind of money for a bag target I would instead buy a "Block" that will last for many years and go back to the original suggestion of backing it up with straw bales.

Don't move back until you can form a tight group consistantly . If you are missing the target , you are beyond your effective range .

Check out the Cabela's brand bag target, I have shot at that, and seems to hold up well.

I shoot a lot and have since made my own bags. I take the bag from my 60# corn I buy and stuff with handi-craft poly fill from Wal-Marts.. works great and stops those arrows dead :yikes: The cost is only the filler :corkysm55
or you can buy these on eBay and stuff them . they run $4

How much filler do you put in, and how much are you spending on the filler ??? is it really worth the trouble ?
