While we were fishing Friday my 1990 15hp Mercury kicker stopped and when I got it started again there was no forward or reverse. I took the cover off and the linkage works back to the engine. The thottle works just fine also just no gear. Anyone ever run into this problem and any good repair shops aroung the Flint area??? Need this motor working before we go to Burt Lake at the end of the month.
Thanks in advance,
Barry L

I suggest draining your lower unit lube. Look for metal pieces sounds like the driveshaft is stripped or broken.

It could also be something as simple as a shear pin. Good Luck

Always check the simplest thing (the shear pin) first. Then move on to other things.

Next, please - Small Outboard Repair - 15hp Merc 1990
I drained the lower unit lube through cheese cloth and it was clean. The color looked good. I removed the prop and cleared out some 8lb XT that I thought I got, reassembled, and still don't have the gears engage. The next step would require a bearing Carrier tool which I do not have. Do you think I would discover any thing with that or should I take it in???
THANKS all for your previous help ;) !!!

Tony is a very good guy, and VERY fair on his price, even if you do mention my name.

Thanks for the reference! I called Tony and mentioned your name, he chuckled and said "Oh Yeah." Not sure if I should be scared now . We went through the whole senerio and it's probably better to just take it in, that is if I want to be able to use by the end of the month (with me working on it :dizzy: ). I also have some other issues (very hard steering on the 135 Optimax) so I will have them check it out.
Thanks again everyone for the help. Hope to see everyone on the water this year (Burt last week of May, Saginaw Bay/Twas in June, Mullett Lk/Rogers City/Petoseky - three weeks end of Aug/Sept and where ever after that).
Ahhhhh! Good work if you can find it!

Good news on the kicker motor, it was just a broke gear bracket. Yeah!
Thanks everyone for your help! Hope I can return the same some day. ;)
