I have a 14' Sea Nymph, my transom was cut low to accomodate a short shaft motor. I purchased a used long shaft 20 hp merc, so when I replaced the plywood on the transom i made it come staright across the back of my boat ( 4 1/2" higher). It is taking forever to get the newer motor repaired and I am going thru fishin' withdrawl!! I put the short shaft 9.9 Evinrude on the back and the water intakes are just underneath the bottom of the boat.
Do you think it would be safe to take it for a slow short ride to do some whipping this weekend?

The faster you run your boat, the higher the motor intake will be out of the water, which could mean that you will end up with a very hot motor and a destroyed impeller at the least.
