It's sure nice to score the first goal and take a lead into the first intermission. Just a couple more inches and it could have been 3-0 Detroit with the two posts from Schneider.

Why is it that they can't get things going? I thought the 1st period was the best yet, and then the 3rd was just plain crap! They need to win the next or its trouble

They just couldn't get it going for nothing. Great first period. Not real good second period. Really bad third period. Man I hate staying up for a loss.

We are S O F T.
SJ pushes off the puck like it's nothing. The majority of our guys look like 3rd graders on the playground trying to play with the 8th graders.
There's only one word that comes to mind when trying to describe Pavel Datsyuk. And it rhymes with wuss!
And those were two pretty lazy goals that got by Dom. Had he stayed on his skates (not his style) I think he would have stopped both of them.

I can't figure out why they don't apply pressure in the defensive zone. That's where it kills them. They allowed SJ to control the puck and make clean passes without any pressure. As much as they were concerned with Thornton, look at how long they allowed him to actually make a pass!!

It also seems that when we're in our own zone and SJ is applying pressure, our guys are so worried about getting hit, they make terrible passes (if that's what you can call them). They start ducking the contact instead of getting good wood on the puck.
I thought they blew a great chance last night and really showed in the 3rd period that SJ intimidates them (size-wise).

Is it me, or does it seem like Bertuzzi is going into the penalty box at the worst possible times:confused: . They keep raving about him, but I have not seen anything other than his size that impresses me. Sure miss Holmstrom im front of the net:sad:

Right on,, and in your other post,, I thought Dom's goals were a little "weak" as well. Like I've said numerous times,,, Detroit has fits with teams that "run at 'em". Before game 3 started I thought it was gonna be a game that Dom stole for 'em and after the first 30 mins,, I was thinkin' I'd be right. I thought SJ would "panic" a bit and start running around in their own zone and making bad passes that Detroit would capitalize on. It just didn't happen,, SJ doesn't panic,, kinda like the Sabres in their series'. On to Bertuzzi,,, I'm willing to give him a pass,,, the dude has only played like 20 total games all year and he's still not sure of himself out there on the ice. Couple more things,, it seems the refs are starting to "let 'em play" to a certain degree this series, anyone else notice that??

San Jose is running two men at the puck every time they are in our zone. They have been succesful because Detroit is making bad decisions and turning over the puck. What they need to do is make a quick pass away from the pressure and then hit someone streaking over the blue line. If they do this and create a few odd man rushes San Jose will have to back off. On the other side of the coin, if we keep turning the puck over in the defensive zone because of the pressure we are done.
Babcock is a good coach. I think next game the Wings take better care of the puck, use passing and skating to their advantage and come home 2-2.

Is it me or are we giving up 2 inches and 20lbs. per man or what. Chelios looks lost at times out there, He is tiny compared to their forwards. Our defensemen are terrible puck handlers when they are pressured!!! I'll give SJ credit, they are very good at getting the puck in deep, they use their size in the corners and cycle the puck. The Wings start chasing them and all of a sudden you get a penalty or a guy wide open in the slot who sneaks in the backdoor.

There were quite a few times that I noticed some of the Wing's forwards could have beaten a SJ player to the puck in the corners but they backed off and let SJ gain control. Talk about frustrating!

I don't know, I think Datsyuk is playing well for his size, he's 5'11 185, where most of the sharks are 6'2-6'3 210-220, those some big boys. Heck he checks harder than Lang whos over 6'0 maybe 220.
Wed. night game will be a lot better, Homer will be back and hopefully they'll be settled in a little better in San Jose.
Oh and Thorton is a beast.

Here we go on the Lang Kick again!!! Let it go!!! There are alot of the wings that obviously have not been playing their best hockey. Lang is not the only problem here

Amen! Lang may just be one of the bigger problems.
Is it just me, or does St. Nick seem, well almost human this year? I see him getting beat in ways that I never thought would happen on a regular basis. Still think he should be a wing for life though!:D

I think that untill alot of the big name players start to step up and start producing some points, we could sit here and badmouth pretty much everyone on the team except a few. Again, I honestly don't think that Lang is the only problem. They went into this series scared, somehow Babs needs turn things around and bring em home 2-2

This is incredibly hard to do, especially agianst SJ considering that they are excellant on their defensive responsibilities. Their playing a style similar to a modified left wing lock. The 2 crashers, and the rest are taking away the middle. Their conceding the perimeter to us, but their not gonna let anything come up the middle. Notice how, even the 1 or 2 odd man rushes we have mustered, they did a bang up job keeping us spread far to wide. There was never a chance of a saucer on the tape. I know the Wings won't do this, but I believe we have to change our game a little to create more chances. If SJ is going to continue to concede the perimeter, we have to dump the puck in. Come through the neutral with speed, wrap it around the end, for the love of God Wings do a better job of puck support near the dasher!, and hard pressure on those rookie D-man and force turnovers. We're not gonna create TO's, or get odd mans out of our end, or in the neutral, it ain't gonna happen. Our best shot (IMO, I could be wrong) is rush those kids back there on the dump in, force the extra (wrong) outlet, and our best chance at an odd man, comes off of the TO down low. We can generate a 2 on 1 in the low slot. We haven't generated nearly enough quality scoring chances by trying to hit that pass in the middle with speed. Hell, SJ is playing better puck possession than we are right now. Ron got schooled by Scotty and Barry before, evidently he took alot of notes.
Oh and finally, Nabokov still doesn't impress me. He has faced alot of 35-40 footers. Those are crap. Tough chances down low, and I just don't see "Stanley Cup Goaltender" written on Evgeni. Toskala plays better IMO. Homer could be the turning point in this series. God, let's hope so. Nabokov has a temper. He can be rattled. Some goaltenders (Dom, Roy among many others) play better pissed, Nabokov does not. You get under his skin, and he's off his game.:)
Oh, and while I'm on the subject. Forget about Lang for a minute. My beef is with Sammie. Move your friggin feet! Don't stop, don't stand there and stickhandle, jink and jive, (in your own end especially!) and expect to shake 3 defenders. Keep your damn head up, MOVE YOUR EFFING SKATES, and hit the outlet along the boards to keep that puck moving out of the zone! I'm sick and tired of seeing him stop his feet! Move damn it, move! This ain't November anymore!

When Homer hits the ice I think it will be the missing link in this series, he can lay one on the gomers that are crashing, he's tough as nails and we gotta get him back in front of the net. Nabokov has let a lot of rebounds come out where Homer could have pounced. And Lidstrom is getting beat because he is taking more chances because of the pour play along the dashers, he's trying to keep the tempo up and pressure deep. SJ does an awesome job of tying up the neutral ice so he's making some mistakes but that happens when you take chances, like they say though chance favors the bold, it will pay off. Also did anyone notice how sh**ty the ice was at JLA last game? Also we need some help from the maintenance guys, weld another brace or two behind the nets and deaden those boards that would throw SJ off a bit, they are slappin em off the end boards and getting some killer angles at the net.

Despite what Mickey and Ken say, JLA has the worst ice in the league. Especially on warm days.

Detroit's defensemen use that same tactic quite often. Watch Chelios and Lidstrom and you'll see them bounce it off the boards to a forward in front and a little to the side of the net.

Oh yeah, 90% od Chelios's shots are wide of the net on purpose. There are alot of teams who have used that tactic. Pretty smart if you ask me!!

What? The Joe is known as one of the best, most consistant surfaces because it is kept so cold. They might have had an off day, but it's far from the worst. The Southern/Western teams and MSG are notorious for the worst ice.

Agreed on your first point. If there was a strategy to consistantly get odd-man rushes in the NHL, it would have been figured out by now. San Jose still has 3 guys in the neutral zone when they make their dumps
I'm impressed with Nabokov, but it is in part due to the first game and the "Red Wings Effect" (lots of shots, but many from the perimeter), and because he has played better than Dom in 2 of 3 games. He is making some big saves when necessary, but he's prone to those big rebounds, which the Wings really, really need to capitalize on. Homer will definately help, but don't underestimate Nabby.

We are going to need the ol master between the pipes to win a couple of games on his own if the Wings are going to make a run at it. The last game was split. We dominated the first 30 minutes they dominated the second 30 and they beat us. A couple posts and Nabby came up big a few times in the first. The Sharks have a very good team that is going to get chances. Hasek needs to pull one out for us. He's been ok, but not stellar by any means. Unless it gets out of hand early I expect a similar game tonight.
Homer should help get to some loose pucks. Hopefully we bury a few. Its game seven tonight for the wings.
