Hey guys, just got my new 498c by garmin the other day. My question is , it has the red and black wires that are going to the battery terminals I assume. Also there are like 6 seperate wires also for various add-on`s. Should I put electrical tape on them individually and then together so they can get stuffed in the battery case??? Nothing in the manual explains that. Thanks

If you don't have the manual, you can downlaod it at Garmins website. That will tell you what wires are what.

No, I have the manual, like I stated...It doesnt say how to store the 6 interface wires not being used...There for nmea out and nmea in,canetL and canetR, accessory on, and alarm low. Also says ...During a typical install only red and black wires are used. The other wires do not have to be connected for normal operation of the unit. My question was do I just tape them off and stuff `em in the battery case ??? Thanks again...

GRB,

It's probably a good idea to use snips to cut off the tinned end of the wires - THEN tape 'em off & wrap 'em up.

Your accessory on should probably be tied to your GPS antenna if external and unswitched. May powered GPS antennas will contiune to draw power and drain a battery if they are not turned of. Many manuals don't tell you this. You should probably see if that is the case. Not sure why else they would have a ACC lead on the head unit.

The extra wires can be interfaced with other electronics items such as VHF Radio, Auto Pilot, ect.

I had my Raymrine Chartplotter connected to my Raymarine VHF radio. If I were to hit the distress button it would automatically pull the coordinates from my GPS and send it to the Coast Guard!

These electronics companies are offering more and more ways to use multiple units together, this way they sell more stuff!

Thanks again for the insight, trimming the leads wasnt mentioned in my manual. I will do that before taping off for sure.As with doing something with the acc. on wire.My Garmin has an internal antenna . Will I have draw issues with that being the case?See ya on the water...:fish:

:yeahthat: On my Lowrance I put a inline switch to the gps......when I get in the boat...I turn the switch on....and by the time I'm ready to head out the gps has me located and I'm good to go! If no switch as Jason says....it will draw from your battery!
