Shanny left at a time when the Wings were rebuilding. Yzerman had retired, and the transition was being made to let the kids take over. He left at the right time, and without burning bridges like Fedorov. I don't know why you guys hate him so much. Shanny had been looking at buying a house in NY for years as well, and he just left, I'd loved to have him back, but too bad. That $4 million we didn't use on him helped us bring back Pavel and Kronwall, plus a little extra for some missing pieces, Shanny knew it was time to go, and did so without the sensationalism.
Avery was awful with the Wings, and no one could have forseen this kind of turn around. He has only been playing decent hockey since the trade to NY, he was awful with the Kings as well. The guy was a poor fighter, took way more penalties than he drew and might pot 10 goals per season, that is not a guy you want on a Championship-caliber team. This Sean Avery we've been seeing the past 2 months is a very different product, and that's great news for the Rangers.

dont take this the wrong way, but iv heard the bull crap story 100 times and from as many people... it has no merrit w/ me. he had no reason to leave. if it was time for the "Kids" to take over... why didnt nick move home to swed. and let the kiddies take over? drapes? malts? all old timers from wings yesteryear. shanny was greedy and went to a team he thought wouldnt flop in the off's. you cant tell me other wise. i think its great the wings are far better off than his rangers are.:D a nice slap in the face for him.

He left cuz he wanted to leave. He gave a lot of great years to Detroit and then he wanted to move who cares he doesn't owe you, other red wing fans or Detroit a damm thing. I hope you never change employers or occupations then maybe people can wish you misfortune. It's a job he had enough and wanted to try somewhere else get over it

...and Shanny was tired of always being in someones doghouse. It's no secret that many people still on the roster have not warmed quickly to Bab's methods. Remember how Shanny was always the scapegoat for Bowman? Why did it take so much to get him to perform consistently - don't get me wrong, I loved Shanny in a Wings jersey and hate to see him wearing that stupid Rangers shoe-thing, but he left in a decent way, at a time when he felt it was right, and really didn't do anything to hurt the organization. He is on the downside of his playing career in hockey, and look at some of the people that are putting in time on the Joe's sheet - Filpulla, Cleary, et al...these guys wouldn't be getting as much time if Shanny were still taking 14-15 minutes a game, while not hitting as much as he used too...
Good luck to him - hope they lose to the Wings in the finals!
How is he greedy? We offered him the same contract to stay in Detroit(or possibly more $$). He wanted to leave, who cares. Also, the Rangers werent really a sure-bet for the offseason..
I bet you boo Fedorov everytime he touches the puck, too.

Well said Ganzer. I wish Shanny the best of luck, and would quite honestly love to see the Rangers take Buffalo in this series. Don't get me wrong I know it is not going to happen. But I still would love to see it.

Ya, that pretty much sums it up.
Shanny also talked with a lot of current and former Rangers before he left and from what everyone says,,,, NY is right up there with the Wings as far as a "Class Organization", to play for. I was never a real big Shanny fan and even less so when Bowman made him change "his game" to fit Scotty's system. With that said,, I have nothing but respect for him,, he's got game. Also,, Shanny didn't hold Detroit ransom,,,, like Federov. As for Avery,,, I don't think that's the same dude the Wings had,, Seeing him play for the Rangers,, reminds me of a young Michael Peca or Matthew Barnaby,,, a guy you want on your playoff roster.

I am just jelious. The Wing's should have tried to keep Shanny happy. They could really use a good right hand shot. I completly understand the need for movement with players and you can't fault a guy for wanting to make himself happy. I guess I am just being a good Redwing's fan and wondering why anyone would want to leave Hockey Town.

How can you miss something you hardly ever saw in the playoffs?
Shannahan's wife is from the east coast and he is also pretty involved with the player's union. I assume he'll be taking a job with them after his playing career is over.
He was pretty heavy handed in the Lockout negotiations.

WHEN I SAID GREEDY I DIDNT MEAN MONITARILY... and caps lock was on due to my parrot taking a stroll cross the key board:lol: i ment greedy as in he figured the rangers would be better off than the wings. u cant tell me he didnt. and he doesnt owe us anything, its just a crap shift when a person puts so much into a team and then just heartlessly picks up and says eh im done w/ u... i even recal him sayin the fans are better in nyc? but that might not be right? either way, say what u will but ill always be a bit bitter towards him. he wont get booed by me, like feds, but ill never be able to look at him the same. it was just kinda cheap.
