While I have no idea right now, the little I do know is that you can't logically put the words GRAPHITE REEL and SALMON/STEELHEAD in the same sentence and come up with very good results I would think.

I know that Shimano has a series of mooching reels that are graphite composite and are extensively used on the West Coast for back-bouncing heavy rigs (spawn, shrimp, etc) for salmon and steelhead.

What is mooching?

Originated on the Pac. N. West coast: Not using the motor to troll, just drifting with the wind or water current, a free ride, a moocher.

Before divers a sinker on a bead chain was used to get down, from 2 to 8 or more ounces of lead. Years later the divers followed: Pink Lady, Deep Six etc. The bait was a herring on a double hook rig with 3-4 feet leader. Sometimes a hoochie (squid) is added to the front hook. Years later downriggers were added, coppied from the G. Lakes, you know-us guys.

The charter boats fishing out of Illwaco, Wa. at the mouth of the Columbia River still fish this way. Sometimes they troll but mooch when they can.

The big "mooching" reels came from B.C. Canada, on the inside of Vancouver Island, the Canadian Off Shore Islands and the U.S. San Juan Islands, where the fishing depth was very deep. These islands are mountain tops sticking out of the water. Depths of over 1,000 feet a few hundred yards from shore are not uncommon.

sam i know what your thinking. i tried it with the diawa moocher and it works...somewhat. the problem is the free spool isnt anywhere near a pin's free spool. to counter it i had to end up using a piker 40gramer to make it work properly, and its still not up near a pin's capabilities but close. however i will say it makes pier bangin a hell of a lot better with that drag. no more kings burning a hole on my palming hand!
