I believe if the Lions play their cards right they should be able to get two starters out of this #2 pick. I believe that a team somewhere in the 5-10 pick range will be willing to trade up to get Calvin Johnson, If we can get a Starter plus a pick in that range, we still may be able to get our guy in Gaines Adams!!! I believe that is the best route available. Let's here your thoughts?

Keep the pick and draft Johnson. He's supposed to be the next phenom and he's the best player in the draft, IMHO.
I know, I know,...not ANOTHER reciever but the Lions would be fools if they let him pass.

Proof that Millen is a little lost with the Draft process.......

Sports Illustrated draft specialist today said that his inside contact from Atlanta told him that the Falcon's owner told management "I don't care what it takes, you go out and get me Calvin Johnson". Atlanta has the # 8 in the 1st round, and would have to throw in #39 and #44 in the second, and #75 in the 3rd. The lions could use that pick to take Patrick Willis, and couple #39, #44, their own 2nd round pick #35 to trade up with Washington who NEEDS more picks and wants to trade out of their pick. The Lions could draft Amobi Akoye here, or have an outside chance that Gaines Adams slips to 6.
If the Lions get both Willis and either Akoye or Adams, they will most likely have the top rated draft in the NFL this year.

Best trade at this point looks to be with Atlanta. Atlanta has the #8 pick and also has 2 2nd round spots, #'s 39 & 44 and they want to pair up Calvin Johnson with Michael Vick.

I say swap our #2 pick for the #8 pick, both of their second round picks and maybe a 2nd or 3rd round pick next year. Then take Landry if he slides or Patrick Willis or Adam Carriker with the #8 pick.

Great minds think alike, you beat me to it Joe.

Yeah, but Matt Millen isn't YOUR dad!
But what do you think about the second trade with Washington??

Supposed to be is the key, I'm not disagreeing with you I love Calvin Johnson, but I don't think he is the answer for this team.

P.S. Mel Kipper had Mike Williams as the #1 Player in the Draft the year we got him and look how that turned out so far.

Never said he was the answer for this team.
However, after all scouting reports, Johnson is the best draft possibility out there...for any team really.
Lions should draft him, get rid of McCown and M. Williams.
We don't need a QB in the draft.
We need offense and defense lineman but you can get those in other rounds, same with other defensive players.
So with that being said......Lions have #2......and ya draft the best player you can in that position. Johnson is that person. If we draft him and trade him or picks, fine. But he's a strong reciever and one that is not affraid to go over the middle.
Think about that.
We could have R. Williams, Furrey, and this Johnson on the same line. Kitna's numbers were good last year, even though he stunk in the 4th quarter.

We already have how many picks in the 4th or 5th round? Those picks are where ya wanna draft linemen and defensive players, which they should do.

Watch out for Al Davis. He used to be a genius, but now he's just a glory seeking maniac. He may throw a monkey-wrench in all this trade talk and take Calvin Johnson. I do agree though if we can get decent value for Johnson in trade then DO it. But don't just trade to trade if you are not getting something equitable in return. Just hope they do get the option to trade....and Millen can turn then into good picks. That's the scary part.

Good point. And from what I've read and heard, Russell's credibility is decreasing...he's overweight, has attitude, and isn't showing up on time when requested. Not a good sign.

I remember being surprised by them picking Sims last year. I didn't see a whole lot of mocks that had that guess.
Atlanta has some picks they can deal, but rumors of the Broncos and Bucs showing interest are out there too.
I think Marinelli's philosophy has made it clear he wants defense. I bet, trade or not, we see defense in the first 3 picks.

I think if they land Gaines Adams AND Patrick Willis in round one, and Marcus McCauly (CB) or Michael Grifith (S) in round 2, they will be 500 or better.

IF they trade the # 2 to Atlanta, I say keep all three 2nd round picks and pick up some decent players there. Forget throwing those 2nd round picks in for a trade up--they can get three quality players in that round and Lord knows our fave team has a pronounced absence of quality players.

Grab the defensive player with # 8 and then sit back and make some real noise in the 2nd round.

Not only can this man keep you from getting the shaft from the ladies...but hes also a football genius:cool: Heres to you Thousandcasts. The lions need as many quality players as they can get..PERIOD. And who needs Johnson when we signed Marcus Robinson yesterday..pfff:lol:

I did not see that they signed Robinson. That should say something about not taking Johnson. How about Peterson that would tick off Cleveland.
Trade down but they need to fall no lower than top 8. They still need an impact type player.

They may take Johnson but not keep him. By picking Johnson they may be able to force a couple of teams who really want him to make a trade to get him.

Does it REALLY matter who we take? Seriously, it's gonna be a 10 loss team anyway you cut it, you have the same core coming back, how will it be any different this year?

Joe Archer

.... how will it be any different this year?
..... but...
O-line - George Foster, Edwin Mulitalo, Zach Piller, Damien Woody, Rex Tucker
Backs - Tatum Bell, T.J Ducket
Receivers -Kasper, McDonald, Robinson, Russel
D-Line - DeWayne White, Shaun Rogers, Shaun Cody, Marcus Lewis, Marcus Parker
Linebackers - Teddy Lehman, Boss Baily
DB's - Travis Fisher, Ike Charlton, Tony Becham

.... there will be differences. The above players are either new or returning from IR last year.

The bottom line is the Lions have a TOTAL of seven players on offense AND defense combined in the same starting positions as they began last season.

It would take a level of compitence that the Lions mgmt doesn't have!!!

Trade the #2 and a 5th rounder to Tampa for the #4, their 2nd round, 3rd round and next years 2rd round pick.

Then at the forth slot try and trade with Arizona, all the pudits think they are very hot for either Joe Thomas or Adrain Peterson, so one of them has to be choosen by Cleveland for that to work, for their 2 round pick.

That would give you the #5 pick, 3 high 2nd round picks, 1 more third round pick.

#5 Gaines Adams
1st 2nd rounder- David Harris LB
2nd 2nd rounder- top secondary player on the board
3rd 2 rounder- top Offensive Lineman on the board
With the remaining picks take the best player available for the system.

Next year isn't going to be that great, anything less than double digits losses will be considered a success. Next year look to take your "QB of the future" the best case scenario is that the Lions might break .500 in the 2009 season.

For the Lions to accelerate the rebuilding process they need to turn that number 2 pick into at least 2 quality starters.
