Looking for a place to fly fish on the north east side of the state for trout. Any information you could share would be most appreciated. I am looking for a place I can go to where there won't be too many people because as I said, I am a beginner. If anyone has any information on rivers such as Rifle, Au Gres, Au Sable, please send me an email or PM. Information needed is flies, access, or any other information would be very helpful.
Thanks

River, so much and just where does one begin. First of all, Trout Unlimited has a series of nice little books about some of the rivers you have mentioned which include maps, places to fish, explainations what you may find, Fly emergence charts all of which are going to be handy. Second, contact places like The Fly Factory in Grayling. They can tell you current river conditions, flies on the water ect ect. Other local fly shops near rivers you are looking at will do the same. Concider giving yourself a guided tour from one of the locals...will be very educational for you. Have you had any fly casting lessons?? Best place to learn is your back yard so when you hit the river you can fish and not worry about learning to cast.
Great fishing and welcome to a fun sport.

If you want one book that will help you get started with access points, pick up "flyfisher's guide to Michigan" by Bedford. Lots of maps and some basics on what flies to use. The TU books are very nice as well-they give you maps that are accurate to the 1/10 mile...

Bedford's book is a good start or try Bob Linsman book, these are very useful tools. Grab an atlas and go explore. Spend a few $ at an over priced fly shop and they will point out some spots.

I have a book you are talking about by Bob Linsenman. What books are there by TU and where do I get them? Does anyone know anything about the East Branch of the Au Gres River? I am hoping someone will PM me and give me a little more detailed information on where to go.
Thanks for the information.....

I think you can find the TU books on there web site. I know the Franks in Linwood has them for sale. Back in the fly fishing dept. I think they are around $20 or so.

Get yourself Bedford's Flyfisher's Guide to Michigan.
It's available through the site. This book is very informational.

I catch myself grabbing it several times a month. I highly recommend it.

Ok, you guys convinced me. I keep saying I am going to order Bedford's book and have even had it in my hand a couple of times at the stores. But I am ordering it right now from the site.

Now stop twisting my arm, it is too hard to type.;)

Sure thing. Does the site get anything for that Steve? If it does you get an added bonus because Bob Linseman had a book on flyfishing Mich. also for an additional $15 so I said what the heck and ordered that too.

Maybe the books will give me some more patterns to keep you busy in the fly library.;)
